Poll question: Democrats who have golf fundraisers
I am really sick of Democrats who have golf fundraisers. Umm...excuse me this is the party of the working man. Why are we having patrician fundraisers that involve a country club sport that wastes large amounts of space in our cities? Democrats should have bowling fundraisers.

Is that the image a Democratic candidate should have?
Maybe it doesn't matter in an upper-income liberal district. I can't imagine why a Democrat in a working class district would want to have a golf fundraiser. It just looks bad.

9. That's ridiculous
I don't golf anymore, but me and my band did while we played out, and trust me, we did NOT look like upper-crust elitists.

And I know many, MANY republicans who bowl, supposedly the 'working-class" sport.

2. Maybe we can all go to a republican golf fundraiser!
I'm thinking something along the lines of the pool scene from "Caddyshack"

Personally, I hate golf. I even refuse to wear golf shirts.

6. They're pragmatists.
Many rich people of both parties like to golf.
(Not-so-rich people also like to golf, but I'm focusing on the rich people.)

Tell people to send you $500 and they'll tell you to take a flying leap. Tell them to send you $750 for a golf outing (with $500 going to the candidate) and they'll ask how to sign up.

I don't get it -- I hate golf -- but if it works, it works.

8. This is ridiculous, because it is an aesthetic rejection
not an ideological or practical one.

If, magically, having Terry McAuliffe literally kiss the toes of Bill Gates and the Walton family would win the Democrats power, then I'd be all for it.

Progressive politics shouldn't be about having a certain sense of self, or even sense of pride, among those who are active politically. It, rather, should be about doing good for the broad masses at home and doing right abroad. If bullshitting with a left-wing zillionaire at the country club helps pocket cash that aids in this aim, then why not?

In practical terms, I seriously doubt bowling alley get togethers are going to be HARMED by wooing rich Dems at the same time.

Only when you can show that the ideological or practical cost of harnessing individual--as opposed to corporate--fat cat sponsorship is unacceptable when compared to the monetary benefit, is it right to complain.

And isn't the obvious answer that the DNC should both: (1) base itself in the masses; and (2) cultivate any liberally-minded, golf-playing, moneybags who wants to help?

10. How many wrong assumptions can you make!?
I'm sorry - but this poll makes some very wrong (and completely stupid) assumptions.

Among them:
1. Democrats don't golf. I know teachers, firemen, bus drivers, small business people who golf. In fact, I understand they sometimes golf with republicans. Horrors!

2. Democrats can't afford to golf. Many public golf courses charge about the same price as a movie & pop corn, and much less than a trip to the amusement park.

3. Democratic party is the party of the working man. True - but I hear we also admit women. At what income level should a person become a republican?

4. Golf courses 'waste' space in cities. Go to any city course, you will see crowds of people out in the fresh air, getting some exercise, and blowing off some steam. Just because you don't partake, doesn't mean it's a waste. If I don't own a car, I could say highways and gas stations are a waste...but it doesn't make it so.

I live in San Francisco, where Democrats get 80% of the vote. Also, the courses are always crowded, and you have to wait 2 weeks sometime to get a tee time.

11. None of the above.
We should be as big a tent party as possible. If rich white golfer geeks want to help with the cause, great, just don't do it to the exclusion of the working people. Have carnivals, cakewalks, whatever - something normal people can afford, maybe a big-ass barbecue at $25/plate. I'd go to that if it was for the cause.
