I like Dirty Pair Flash, Tenchi Muyo series (Muyo and Universe haven't seen all of Tenchi in Tokyo), Armitage, Initial D, Rurouni Kenshin.

5. My son downloads fansubs to share

Fansubbers take the ethical position that it's okay to do amateur not-for-profit subtitling and peer-to-peer distribution of series that haven't come out in this country yet -- and that it probably makes it more likely for them to get distributed here eventually. As a result, fansubs of the latest tv shows generally turn up here within a week or two of their original Japanese broadcast.

The current season hasn't been the greatest, but there are still some good things around. Samurai Champloo (from the same guy as Cowboy Bebop) is probably the best of the bunch -- and highly subversive besides. Melody of Oblivion is fascinating in that typically Japanese overwrought paranoid reality-trippy way. Mahou Shojo Tai is a lot of fun -- cute little witch-girls in 15-minute episodes that pack in as much content as the usual half-hour. And Samurai 7 is a notch below those but still very watchable. (It's "The Seven Samurai" retold as science fantasy. With giant mechs. And bat-people.)

Without anime, it would have been a lot harder to get through the last four years.

8. Errr otaku does not mean fan of anime...

otaku means "fanboy" or"obsessed with" so much so that it leads to the point where that person might have a difficult time communicating in society with "normal" people.

Otaku is not something to be proud of. Ask any Japanese person.

11. You are quite correct, but like many multi-cultural words

Otaku means one thing to the Japanese and another to Westerners. The confusion started due to a bad translation of the word, which has happened with many other foreign terms throughout time.

I'd call myself an otaku here in the USA but you'd never catch me using it in the East.

13. It's unfortunate

but there's a lot of strictly horror anime that gets grouped in with Henti. I was watching one show the other day--I forget the name--and it was labeled as Henti, but there was nothing even slightly pornographic about it. Oh, it was way over the top with gore and nudity, but there wasn't a single sex scene or tentacle to be seen.

I haven't but it's been announced by the Cartoon Network that they've picked the show up for Adult Swim.

Here's a bit about the show. It sounds really warped, which is a good thing imo.

For my personal email I use the servers at www.freeshell.org. The member's server is dubbed 'otaku.freeshell.org'. Now I know what the names means...

Great place for personal email/web/UNIX use, by the way. $36 gets you 300 meg of disk for life.
