CONFESS!!!!! What talents do you have
Real talents, not crazy stuff like you can fart the alphabet or something like that.

Me: I can play the clarinet and saxophone. I enjoyed playing the sax (tenor - like Bill Clinton) but I loved playing the clarinet. My favorite piece was Mozarts K622 - Clarinet Concerto

Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 11:06 AM by VelmaD
I started so young I don't even really remember when I learned the names of the notes. I started formal lessons in kindergarden. I eventually went to college on a piano scholarship. I was really good. I won medals in a couple of international competitions.

I also play percussion, clarinet, and flute.

I remember sitting on my mother's lap playing chopstix. Was classicly trained in piano and in the past 4 years, have gone back into the taking lesson mode to learn blues and jazz. Also play guitar, mandolin and hand bells.

I can tutor algebra and such (including calculus I, calculus II, multivariable and vector calculus, differential equations and matrix theory).

I'm a physics major, which probably makes me sort of a Renaissance man as far as technology, engineering skills, and problem solving skills in various other sciences are concerned.

Then again, none of these are really what you'd call "talents."

with crisped swiss cheese over it. French onion soup with the floating croutons and, more, swiss cheese. Beef Bourginon with those little pearl onions sauteed in butter. Beef chili with dark red kidney beans. And risotto in many forms.

And roast salmon with a pinot noir reduction (balsamic vinegar, shallots, etc). Is it lunch time yet?

9. Hooray for Clarinet players!!
I play wind instruments, too. My favorite's the B-flat Bass Clarinet. Love the deep, rich tones it makes (without the comic honking sound of the bassoon- a horn that makes me laugh when I hear it).

I'm also a pretty funny guy (though that may a bit difficult to tell on DU as I get a bit more... serious here) and do a regular one-night-a-week gig at an Anglo club in Cancun for a extra few bucks of play money :)

13. I'm a decent artist and cook
but I don't have much time for either lately. The computer age has almost completely destroyed my daily pencil and sketchpad habit. Until about 10 years ago I used to fill about 5 pages a day.

I still leave time to make good food for weekend parties, my creations are always a big hit. The only problem is I never use recipes, so when people ask for a recipe I can only give a general approximation.

31. Hey, fellow violin player
10 years of lessons here. With an additional 2 years of fiddle (Bluegrass). It's been awhile, but my finger still work every time I pick it up.

Since then I've taken up the Mandolin, drums, guitar, harmonica, piano and a bit of flute.. I played drums in a rock band with absolutely no training, it was an interesting experience to say the least (read- I could hold a rhythm, but I still sucked :)). Mandolin is cool because the tuning and fingering is exactly the same as violin. It came naturally.

Not the mobster variety, the singing variety. I can also refinish furniture and can do plenty of crafty, decorative type stuff (painting, stenciling, lots of stuff) when I'm feeling like it. Someday, I might buy a house just to do the cosmetic fixings and make some bucks on it in the process.

A few other things as well. :7

38. Well....
I'm a writer and a photographer. I try to sing, and I'm not too bad, but no one wants to listen to me.

I have no actual artistic talent when it comes to "drawing" but I do some mean web graphics.

I remember stuff. I think I'm a savant for television trivia, from the early 60s to the mid 90s. I know actors that no one knows or recognizes. I have a partial photographic memory--I used to look at the pages of text books the morning of tests and remember most of what I saw.

I have an intuitive sense of navigation. This comes in hand when I'm in the rare position of being lost.

It's kind of crazy, but I can write backwards with both hands, as well as regular with both as well. I can even write upside down and backwards.

I think that's about it.

43. Jack of all trades rock'n'roller
I play guitar, bass, and keyboards, and I can drum in a pinch.

While I'm tooting my own horn (actually I wish I played tuba), I have a really good pitch sense that falls just shy of perfect pitch. In my case, it's like I carry a reference A440 around in my head all the time, and I can adjust whatever else I'm doing to it. This also allows me to figure out the chord changes to songs very quickly, and come up with reasonable accompaniments-- which is (partly) why I'm most in demand as a bass player.

Also I have a real good memory for tunes. This turns out to be supported by biology-- I once had my brain scanned, and the doctor told me my "Heschel's Gyrus" is significantly bigger than normal-- and that's the part of the brain where audio memory lives.

DUers in the Boston area may be interested to note that I'll be performing as a singer/songwriter on September 18th in Watertown MA at a venue called the Inner Limits Lounge, at the corner of Waverly Ave and Main Street. I have this scurrillous ditty about the chimp pretender in the White House that I'm real proud of...

I'm also a quick study when it comes to learning languages, and my translation and editing clients like my writing style.

When I was teaching, I used to make my own visual aids, lots of cartoonish, often humorous, drawings to illustrate certain situations or words.

However, anything involving numbers is a struggle for me, and that was true even before I heard that women aren't "supposed" to be good at math.
