I wonder what my students from last year are saying now
I can remember around March of last year as the US stood on the brink of war with Iraq. At that time I was a TA discussion section leader for an introductory government class at the university. We discussed the pending war in Iraq days before it was initiated. I can still remember how all but one or two of the students were absolutley supportive of the war, with many of them outright enthusiastic for it to start. I can still remember this one little sneering College Republican sitting in the front of the class with a mocking, condescending look on his face as I raised questions about the utility of going to war with Iraq. I can still remember the students who said that once the war started there must be no criticism of "President Bush". I wonder what they are all saying now. I know what I am saying now: I TOLD YOU SO!

2. What amazes me is the utter
surprise of the pundits that the war is going so badly. It's like they are in some parallel universe. There is no acknowlegement that all this was said before we went. Even now their solution is just don't talk about it.

3. Do you think that they
remember that Saddam was writing romance novels at that point in his life... and that the Iraqis were in the process of cutting up missiles that could fly what was it... 15 miles to far... and that UNSCOM was scouring the country?? I believe they managed to get 72 destroyed before we began the assault.

Look at it from their perspective, whether the U.N. told them that they couldn't have this or that.. (not that I am siding with their resistance to the U.N.)

But think for a minute... you have a country at your border "Iran" that tried tooth and nail to take you out a couple not too long ago... and someone comes over and says... hey... get rid of those missiles... and you proceed to cut them up... imagine that.

Now imagine that Canada had it's eye on our territory... had gone to war with us a decade or so ago... and Russia came over and said... that if you don't lose those ICBM's we are going to kick you ass to hell and back.

Tell me the magic number of missiles we would cut up... and tell me how many weapons inspectors we would let into our top secret facilities...

Clue: The number of missiles that we would have cut up is less than one. And the weapons inspectors would have a hard time getting a visa to come here and inspect our "stuff". Sorry for rambling on... but sometimes I think there are double-standards.

We talk about how Iraq invaded Kuwait... but we don't talk about how our state dept. alluded to the idea that we would have nothing to say about it.

We talk about how Iraq invaded Kuwait... but we fail to mention what we did in Chile, Iran, and several other democratically elected governments around the globe... 40 some if I remember correctly. Oops.. there I go rambling again....

4. Perhaps the Red Cross can help you regain contact?
I believe they're the group that can locate service people--since all the little warmongers have, no doubt, joined up.

It would be highly interesting to locate as many as you can. And to gently inquire why those who are still civilians have shirked their duty to Their President.
