ANyone see the new US Army commercial?
Kid and dad are driving.

Kid talks to dad about wanting a job that lets him be who he wants to be, and be happy, and whatever.

Dad responds "if you found something like that, you'd be ahead of most people."

Ahhh yes they will be happy... but many that they have taken who have returned from Iraq are not all that happy... and they are getting ready to talk about it real soon.

5. Here's hoping they do talk. Loudly, and frequently.

6. well, yeah, he'd be ahead of most people
but then again, I'm certain that there are only...5, maybe 7 people on the entire planet who enjoy what they do and would be happy to continue to work in their field if they got paid $0 a year.

Strange, that commercial. I saw it the other night and thought it was so strange. I mean, EVERYONE--EVERYONE I know in the military HATES being in the military. They work with a bunch of assholes, don't get promoted, don't get decent pay hikes.....and they say it's SOOOO much different in the 'outside world'---at which point I just have to chuckle long and hard.

A good ex-friend of mine has spent 10 years in the USAF. 10 years of bitching and complaining about her supervisors being assholes. People below her not giving her respect. People equal to her not treating her like a peer. Having to work odd hours for low pay. Not enough of this, too much of that. Office politics and cliques blah blah blah. So she says "When I get out and get a normal job, I'm not going to have to worry about any of this, right?"

I laughed.

I told her she'd be lucky if she got paid 50% of what she was worth, she'd have to pay for health insurance (if her boss offered it), she wouldn't get housing $$, she wouldn't get 30 days of vacation a year, she wouldn't get military discounts, and she'd DEFINITELY still have to put up with managers who think they're higher than God, subordinates who think they're the smartest chimps on the planet, and coworkers who'd rather shit on your desk than say "good morning" to you. There's the cliques, politics, work long hours and get no good pay for it. PLUS---in the "real" world, they can fire you a fuck of alot quicker and for alot more menial things than the military would/could.

She still doesn't believe me when I tell her most jobs only offer you (at most) 1 week vacation after your first FULL year, maxing out at 3-5 weeks after about 5+ years. Oh no, she says. I heard that most companies give you two weeks OFF THE BAT...yeah right. I'm 28 and for the first time in my life I'm working at a job that starts you off with 1 week the day you start and after 7 years you get 12 weeks, which is the max. And that's pretty odd....
