How are YOU going to get thru this election season w/your sanity intact?
Sorry for the icky spelling of "through" in the title, couldn't fit it all.

I'd like this to be a thread where we can help each other get through this election season with our sanity (anyone here still have it?) by posting suggestions for doing so.

I'll start off:

1. We are having movie marathons on DVD each Saturday night--musicals and Hitchcocks, mostly, though we may change over to picking a year (ie: 1949) and watching all the movies that won awards from that year.

2. My boss, a big liberal, has gone back to an old hobby of rebuilding car engines. It completely absorbs his mental energy and he forgets all about the election for a few hours.

3. I have a friend who attempted to start writing a book, but she found all she wanted to write about was this election and attendant issues, so she has turned to losing herself in reading trashy novels.

Add yours!!!

4. I have been working on my stained glass lamp
that I've been working on for about 18 months. Hadn't done any on it since last summer, soooooooooooooooooo I'm trying to get this election out of my head a bit. But I keep coming back to it. It's really bugging me. Wish I could be more like some of my friends who don't give politics one thought and they don't vote either. But I can't do that when our country is in such trouble.

11. Sometimes I find myself feeling jealous of people like that
I used to be that way. Head happily buried in the sand.

But I can't go back to those days. I just can't.

5. Drinking
On a serious note,

I am actually trying to watch less news. I come to DU to get updated on news events but watching cable news and reading newspapers can get a bit crazy. I'm sick of all this poll crap as well.

I know who I'm voting for (Kerry) and I know Kerry will make a wonderful, strong leader. Let the critics say what they want but if we all continue to work hard on behalf of the Kerry campaign, we will put our guy in the White House.

9. Yeah I don't watch TV news
but I have found myself turning it on lately, which is pissing me off. I watched BBC World News last night and am watching the NBC Nightly News now (why do I do that to myself?).

I do the same thing most times, I just check DU and the LBN board.

I will tell Mr. Moonbeam it is for my sanity. He'll accomodate me and watch it in the other room, sound turned low.

7. raising 2 children under age 2
It takes about 99% of my free time, so I don't have time to watch cable news and get freaked out by the day to day stuff. Whenever I turn on cable news, I'm nauseated after about 5 minutes and turn it off.

I donate $$ to the campaign/DNC, and send emails to my undecided cousin in Missourri.

Can't say it has relaxed me mucht though. I couldn't get to sleep after I heard about the 11 point lead.

I think I'll try meditation and yoga.

That it turned out to be two? Just in case you hadn't heard, I wanted to put you at ease about it.

It beats the rotgut I've been drinking the last couple of years. A nice bottle of Oban or McCallan would be nice too!

17. I'm recording an album
For my best friend's band. When I am in the studio behind the board, everything else just kind of ceases to exist. Same thing when I'm on stage playing. I've got a few gigs to do in between sessions, so hopefully I can stay occupied.

18. Got to take Internet breaks--the Net is just too full of corrosive stuff
Nearly every time I'm on the Net, I will run across news/stories/posts/whatever that just send my blood pressure into orbit.

I want to remain informed, and I want to participate in Web-activism as much as possible, but I do need to get away from it every few days or so.

Many is the time I've staggered off to bed late, with my insides churning from reading fallacious/libelous/inflammatory material targeted at Democrats/Kerry.

It's an ulcer in the making.

23. Read novels: mystery, suspense ...
the sort of thing that will hold your attention. I must admit I'm not doing this myself, although I'm a bookworm (I'm reading political books, which I don't recommend). Solving crossword or logic puzzles might also work.

I'm not doing so well. I nearly went insane last week during the RNC. But this week, I finally got my Kerry gear and am optimistic again. So buying Kerry gear and wearing it definitely helps.

I'm nearly 38 and have never studied a foreign language. It will be a challenge.
I am also fortunate to have some wonderful friends to hang with.
I like your thematic DVD idea.
