*SNIF* - My Stepson Is Making Me SO Proud At College!
Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 12:16 PM by matcom
:eyes:

just started Community College cause his f*cking grades at the expensive private Catholic School were so f*cking WONDERFUL! (NOT)

so, he enrolls for this semester taking 4 classes 3 days a week :eyes: so he can work his dream-job making pizza's (oh don't worry, they MIGHT make him an assistant MANAGER soon!) :eyes:

so, his course "load" this semester is:

Contemporary Cinema
Magic, Witchcraft & Healing :eyes:
INTRODUCTORY Algebra
First-Year Composition

*SNIF*

sure hope he doesn't have to work too hard! :eyes:

2. in his defense
the magic course will likely have a lot of reading, writing, and critical thinking. The composition course will up his basic writing skills, and if he needs intro to algebra, its good that he's taking it

9. As a real magician
The magic course will be a waste unless it teaches him the double-lift for cards, the Erdnase Card Color Change, how to palm a coin, and classic misdirection.

There should also be a subsection dedicated to the writings of James Randi.

Alas, I suspect the course is really about spells, hexes, etc. More money wasted.

:)

29. But what about "Aspen Extreme?"
Sorry-- :D

Reminds me of an evening about 8 years ago when I'd gone to see a friend's band play at a club in Deep Ellum. Several other interested friends of theirs were there.

One guy introduced himself, and said he was a film student. So I'm visualizing people like Spike Lee, Robert Rodriguez, and Richard Linklater, giving this guy credit for thinking something really interesting and creative.

Thinking along the lines of "La Dolce Vita" or "Un Chien Andalou," I ask him what his favorite film is.

His answer?

Aspen Extreme.

I had to excuse myself to laugh because I didn't want to spit Whiskey Sour all over the deluded boy.

Aaaaahhhh The Texas Education System.

I thought all community college freshmen had to also take:

NBA Mascots: Are they really big animals?
Hydraulic principles of the keg.
Your ass from a hole in the ground: A comparative study.

10. Awww, c'mon now!
A lot of intelligent people who just can't afford college have to go to community college. It's a damn shame they get lumped in with the less intelligent. A real eye-opener for the intelligent ones, though... that's for sure.

11. Not everyone had mommy and daddy to pay their way.
I had better grades and better SATs than many of my friends who went to private universities, but I didn't have parents willing to help in any way, didn't have a scholarship, and didn't have $10,000-15,000 a year to lay down at the time. What's a person supposed to do otherwise? Especially when you can actually take decent classes which will transfer to a 4 year school, it's pointless to drive yourself any further into debt.
Doesn't sound like that's the case with Matcom's stepson though, but I had to also digress a bit here.

32. Thanks for clearing that up
Taken on face value, the community college inclusion sounded a tad elitist. CC is among the most democratic institutions left in this country.

I was just agreeing with Redqueen in response to her post. I know you well enough to know you're not like that. 'Matcom' and 'elitist snob' are not two things I think of as something in the same realm. :pals:

14. Okay, settle down...
I just wanted to list some other classes that sounded as funny to me as that magic one so don't be taking it the wrong way. In fact, I think all college freshmen - community or 4 year could benefit from those classes. So there. Nyeh. :)

17. Sounds a bit like my son...
...he hated school with a passion. He only went to our local community college to make his Mom and me happy. It took him 4 years to get a two year degree! He's been out of college now for two years. Monday he starts a new job. At $50K. Honest.

All those years I thought he was just vegetating in front of his computer, it turns out that over the years he learned a lot about Windows, how applications interact with operating systems, browsers, firewalls, etc. After he finished college, he took some MS certification tests, passed, and now he's a help desk technician and really good at it.

Bottom line? Don't push your step-son too hard. He may have talents you don't know about. Or he might turn his pizza making experience into owning a Papa John's franchise.

21. Oh, don't worry Matcom.
Ten, maybe fifteen, years from now you'll proudly sit in the audience, the strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" playing in the background, as your stepson makes his way to the stage to accept his diploma. You and Mrs. Matcom will wipe away tears of joy (and wonderment) as you send him on his way to the real world. To that I say: Godspeed, young step-Matcom! Godspeed!

23. Relax
I took four cinema courses in college. They were more difficult than most of the science courses I took. I had to learn cinematography for real. And the movies they made me watch were not about teenagers losing their virginity.

Basic Algebra and Composition are nothing like high school courses. He will actually have to learn how to do algebra, and he will actually have to learn how to write. If not ... F.

The Magic, Witchcraft and Healing course is the wild card. But if the instructor even has two brain cells with functioning synapses, there will be a large chunk of history to be studied. Occultism is a huge study in itself, and that doesn't include crap like How to Cast Spells, Why It's Now Spelled "MagicK", and How to Give Your Cat a Really Cool Name.

And he's working. Remember all those lectures about The Dignity of Work.

Perhaps he needs to take a couple years off from community college and try to make it on his own as a pizza place manager.

That's essentially what I did. Now I'm working on my doctorate.

would tease me about what I was taking in college, like basketweaving and lunch, so finally, one semester I actually took basketweaving, although it was called Fibers 1. I made some beautiful baskets and a loom on which I weaved a couple of small rugs. They were silent after that.
