I sent this in email (exactly as it appears because I was upset) to my sister back home in CA.
"when you live in so cal, and there's an earthquake while you're at work, you can pretty well know for sure that it was felt at your house, too. if it was bad enough, your boss will probably let everyone go home, so you'll know before too long if your house was damaged. but all that matters really is that you've lived there forever and you can judge what's coming in the next few hours by the tic on the richter scale. "when you grew up in so cal and suddenly live where there are tornadoes, and you're stuck at work 35 miles and an hour and a half from your house, and you hear there's a tornado warning in your neighborhood, all you can do is find a tv and hope the news is on live & tracking the rotation, and plot your home's location as best you can. and bite your nails and pray to whatever that your home isn't in a million bits and your cats aren't strewn dead in the few remaining standing trees. "aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "As it turns out the rotation is well southwest of our house. But I HATE the freaking turmoil that these got damn tornado warnings send me into!!"
My sister replied: "dang. and you like it there because... ??"
I told her: "No Santa Anas."
Thank you for sharing this wonderful forever-rent-from-the-bosom-of-my-family (but-worth-it-but-it-makes-me-sad) moment.
