10th grader in trouble over 'Juicy' skirt

BECKLEY, W.Va. - Nichoel Hawks' "Juicy" skirt is a little too much for school officials in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

It's not too short, but too suggestive. The 10th grader was forced to spend a day in the principal's office after she wore the skirt to class. The skirt has the slogan "It's all about Juicy" along the backside.

School district officials say it could lead to sexually harassing comments from other students. Nichoel's mother, Jennifer Hawks, notes Juicy is a brand name of an expensive line of clothing. She says officials didn't know about the brand and made a mistake by banning her daughter's skirt.

Juicy Couture is the name of a clothing design company.

It's a skirt with something on the ass. We see those or shorts with dumb slogans just about everyday in high school. Nobody really says anything about them at all anymore because they're so commonplace... and very rarely do kids ever take the stuff seriously that's written on them. The school board should maybe... lighten up. It's not like she's in junior high and doesn't recognize the pros and cons of wearing that kind of clothing.

Our school has a written policy against suggestive comments on clothes. That wouldn't meet our standards here. It doesn't matter if it's a brand name or not, the manufacturer knows it's suggestive as does the wearer.

The one public school district in my area uses school uniforms. Mind you they keep it pretty simple (either Khaki or dark blue pants and plain white shirt) and they offer assistance to those families that can't afford school uniforms (I had a neighbor in my apartment complex that got a voucher good for JCPenneys where she could get 2 pairs of pants and 3-4 shirts)

I believe in freedom of expession but schools kids are trying to push the limits with how they dress & act. Oddly enough the comic strip "For Better or For Worse" just finished a segment about school dress. April got stop by her mother from wearing a skimpy dress to school and when she got to middle school, it was all the new 6th graders dressed up in as little as possible. The principal had a school assembly to put a stop to it

So would they have still apologized if the brand name had been slutty? If it had said "It's all about slutty" or "It's all about Teen Sex." It shouldn't matter what the brand name was.
