It is time for better names for Hurricanes
Ivan is a step in the right direction.

If I lived in Florida during the hurricane season, I would rather have a vicious sounding hurricane tear apart my trailer park. Frances sounds a little prissy.

I call on the National Weather Service to start naming Hurricanes appropriately. A name like Vlad, Lucifer, Adolf or Zeus is more appropriate for a catastrophic storm than Frances, Agnes or Mitch. Using the names of tyrants like Stalin, mythical gods like Aries, Mafia Kingpins like Gotti, serial killers like Dahmer or even names like Osama, Dillinger or Mike Tyson are bound to strike a more appropriate chord.

5. The problem with naming them like that though...
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 02:03 PM by parasim
... is that you really should wait until the hurricane has run it's course if you want to give it a name that describes it's actions, isn't it?

I mean, for instance, when Francis came barrelling though the Bahamas at a steady clip, thrashing away at everything, it was certainly a Tyson, but when it slowed to a standstill, playing a bit of Rope-a-Dope with Florida there just before landfall, it was more of an Ali...

But you're right though, this doesn't look like the work of a "Francis":

and it looks like Ivan the Terrible is living up to his name...

on edit: cleanup

22. oops. yup, you're right, my bad.
I know it's the female "Frances" but for some reason I kept writing it with an "i".
So I suppose the image that I had above could have been the work of a Francis, or at least one of Sinatra's "friends"...

12. Ivan the T is among the largest seen
still not on the level of Camille, which had winds of 200+ mph in August 1969 which devestated coastal Louisiana and Mississippi.

Camille should have been renamed

7. Yeah
An instead of starting with the letter "A" each year why don't they just start with the next to last letter for a name from the previous season. That way we could get past O and have names that start with Q, R, S, and the rest more often.

And why name them after people? Wouldn't it be appropriate to have a Hurricane called "Wrath" or some other evil word. BTW check this list out: http://www.demonbuster.com/demonlist.html

27. The list of names is published five years ahead
And sometimes they have to edit those lists--let's say Ivan was supposed to be the ninth storm of 2008. Ivan is going to do billions in damage. They will never use Ivan again and will have to change it to Ignatius or something.

9. I wholeheartedly disagree.
I think hurricanes should have names that belie their awesome destructive power. I prefer names like Creampuff, Buttercup, Daisy, Noodles, Spanky, Lulu, and the like. Then again, I'm just a sucker for irony...

10. With all due respect to the victims...
I can't see naming a hurricane after something evil. I don't mind strong names like Zeus; but I can't put Jeffrey Dahmer in the same category.

A hurricane is something which demands our respect even more than our fear. It's one of Nature's methods of putting Mankind in our place and teaching us humility.

And it serves to make us more compassionate, too. Many of us feel more sympathy toward the person who's lost everything than the guy who never had anything to begin with.
