1. of course!
I bought the double live lp Space Ritual the day it came out (I was 16) because they were playing it in the record store! First time I had ever heard of them...I still have all the original albums (I think) up to PRX5...I have been able to get most of them on cd but Quark Strangeness and Charm (probably my favorite) continues to elude me...I liked them especially during the Robert Calvert years, his solo lp "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" is essentially Hawkwind plus Arthur Brown and a few other guests...(Eno? Vivian Stanshall?)
I didn't like them as much when they went more metallic later ...

I did see shows on the two tours "Nik Turner's Hawkwind" did about a decade ago...they were fun but not exactly the same thing, but that's oK...

I also saw Gong (who I kinda compare them to, you know, trippy space rock) a few years ago at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland...Pretty much the original crew was all ther except Steve Hillage, but the guitarist they had knew some chops...now that was a great show! Sparsely attended though...

I think I'll listen to some Hawkwind tonight..."Psychedelic Warlords Disappear in Smoke" sounds good...

3. Blue Man Group uses some Steve Hillage...
Saw them in Vegas a few years ago. Now that was a good-weird show...if you want to talk about touching the audience....it got ... into the throat of a guy...on camera...

"Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music" more Hawkwind.

Brand X ?

6. I never really listened to Brand X...
except for an lp a friend brought over...it seemed more like fusion than the sound I was really into at the time, like Hawkwind, Gong, Can, Henry Cow, even Hatfield and the North...some music engages me and some leaves me sterile...I personally prefer the droning tribal sound over the sudden start stops and abrupt changes (featuring individual virtiuoso instrumentalists) I heard in so many jazz/rock groups...They just do not connect with me, sorry!

ps sorry for late reply was busy getting chagrined in GD2004 forum!

7. plus they were influential (I like to think)...
musically if not content wise...
the bass sets the pace, the beat moves the feet , the rhythm starts the motion...to me that is essential, it is what that is added that determines uniqueness...
I've been listenibg to a bunch of Congolese music lately, especially the great Franco...He had it together!
