Oh my, someone just tried to access my computer.
Norton caught it. That is so creepy.

7. Just remember that Ralph Kramden was a pioneer in space exploration.
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 01:52 AM by elperromagico
Before JFK's pledge to put a man on the moon by the end of the sixties, Ralph Kramden - a lowly busdriver from NYC - had pledged to put someone on the moon "one of these days." And he pledged to put a woman on the moon - not a man.

Talk about ahead of his time!

Welcome to DU. :hi:

3. 60,363 people have tried to access my computer
Maybe you ought to get ZoneAlarm if you're actually concerned about this. 60,364...

6. I agree about Zone Alarm
I use it, have it set the way I want it and generally ignore it. The logs just make you paranoid.

10. Trojans are inside trying to get out. Worms are outside wanting to get in.

11. well i got an alert
it said something about 'Trojan-something or other'. not making the news, only reporting it. maybe it was a virus with Trojan in the name. i don't have the norton firewall anyway...must've been a virus thing

9. Agree with other posters. ZoneAlarm effective, easy and useful.
Like one poster said, set it the way you like it and ignore the logs.

Never run without a firewall. Never open unasked-for email attachments. I examine suspicious email by raw text editor before even opening the message.

What I like about ZoneAlarm is the pop-up messages that request access for programs. Configure it initially so that all programs have to ask for access. Only a couple of programs I allow unquestioned access (like Mozilla browser). All others have to ask each time. That way, I know when Real Media is trying to send unauthorized data back to their server for example. A trojan or worm or virus would also trigger the request for access, though some try to disable firewalls first.

12. raw text editor? what is that?
i make everything but mozilla ask. the newer version of Real Player gives me gas...i am running the oldest real player now-the new one is trying to get out at 9, 12, 3 an so on...plus, you can disable cookies on the Real properties and deny cookies through your browser, and that little real bastard gets cookies on ya...

13. Yes, Real Media is a despicable two-faced company that lies.
I too use an older version of Real Player, deny it just about everything, and don't use it to download from the net. I download and save the file, then look at it with Real Player if I have to, and denying it access to the net.

14. Raw text editor: Emacs. Not a word processor or layout program.
There are many around, but I don't know their names. I use Emacs. Don't use a word processor or layout program like Word. Brief and Notepad can be used in some cases. I think Wordpad tries to do a little too much (download image files).

The thing I hate is that many spam emails include embedded one pixel images that have coded URLs so that they know if you read the email or not. That is why I don't open suspicious emails, but examine their text first.

15. How...
How do you examine suspicious email by raw text editor before opening the message?

And I agree with your take on ZoneAlarm. I read on Gibson Research that it is the only firewall that maps the location of a program trying to access the internet. That was why I bought it.

16. The emails are stored in files. Open the file with a raw text editor.
You can either open the main email file, or you can move the message into a new or temp file without actually opening the message.
