Exciting experiences at church and synagogue!

One time I set my hair on fire during Christmas Eve candlelight services.

After I smacked myself in the head to beat out the flames, I had to sit there with black all over the left side of my face while the two geriatric "gentlemen" behind me chuckled.

1. Nastiest fight I ever saw...
not physically violent but just mean-spirited with people calling each other names...was in church. It wasn't over dogma. It wasn't over money. It wasn't over who made the best fried chicken (an important topic to most Southern Baptists). It was over what color the new carpet in the sanctuary should be. Swear to god. There wasn't even a fight over whether to spend money on new carpet. We argued all night about WHAT COLOR the carpet should be. That was the beginning of the end for me and organized religion.

2. I can't top you smacking yourself in the head.
Funniest I can come up with is telling the priest at my friend's wedding to hustle it up because Notre Dame was on TV.

4. My rabbi hit on me!
I was...15.

He was...early 40s. Married. Two kids; one on the way.

It was *in front of my parents* in the receiving line after the service (in many synagogues, the rabbi and cantor greet attendees as they file for the "oneg shabbat" -- refreshments!).

He told me that "if you were at the University of Michigan when I was at the University of Michigan, I would have been trying very desperately to get you to go on a date with me." (Body language matched "hitting on someone" vs. "showing appreciation for their attendance at the service.")

We quit that synagogue after my confirmation a few months later.

That rabbi is now divorced, out of the closet and happu. He's one of southern California's most prominent rabbis serving the gay and lesbian Jewish community. I wish him well.

5. University of Michigan
Why the University of Michigan? If you were at IU, he wouldn't have asked you out? Hmm. Maybe I went to the wrong college or something. ;) Anyway, funny (yet creepy) story.

7. A fellow dropped the communion tray
which held the individual cups of wine. He dropped it and exclaimed, loudly, "Well, shit!"
