Computer Wizzes: need help saving streaming video from WH web site.
I assume it's legal to save the video streams from the WH web site since they are taxpayer funded video feeds of events conducted by the President. This is for educational fair-use purposes, not to make any money.

For the life of me, though, I can't figure out how to get the URL of the feeds. I use Streambox Ripper and Hi Download Pro and have tried the normal routines: mime capturing, clicking "clip source" in RealAudio, etc.

From what I've read, a packet sniffer is the best way, but nonse of them seem to work w/ my ethernet card.

If anyone has a packet sniffer that works w/ their ethernet card or knows another way to do it, I'll send you a case of beer if you can get the URL for the stream of chimps march 14, 2002 press conference form the WH site (for what I;m using it for I can't legally use a feed from a news organization.

5. Oops
Yes I see. My bad. Dont worry about the beer...this is on the house.

However, apparently the video link is not working. I am getting 404.

It should be "http://whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/03/20020314-16.v.smil"

embedded in the .smil file with be the information about the video stream. Just like the previous audio stream info was embedded in the .ram file.

Sorry I couldn't help out more.

6. FYI
While you dont really need a packet sniffer to get this info, if you really want one in your tool box I would recommend Ethereal.

I have not used the windoze version so if that is your OS your mileage may vary.

check out "http://www.ethereal.com/download.html"

Enjoy,
