8. I've got Chigarid all over me
but then it drives me crazy, I pull it off, then scratch all my skin off, and put on more Chigarid, which then BURNS because I was just scratching it.

Oh yeah. It's fun.

9. Hmmm, hard to describe
they are these tiny biting things that apparently live in the grass in the south. The itch is about 500 times worse than a mosquito bite. In fact, the son of one of my friends got chigger bitten so badly, he started running a high fever and they had to just leave him in oatmeal baths for hours.

I think (unless this is a myth) they burrow under your skin (they are VERY VERY TINY!) and they stay there and that's why they itch so badly. If you put clear nail polish on the bites, it suffocates them and they die, then the itching stops and they eventually work their way out of your skin.

It's pretty horrid. The itching woke me up from a dead sleep at 4 am.

14. Not just the south
I can personally testify that Indiana has them too.

LOTS of them. I made the mistake of sitting down in the woods one time and paid for it for the next week.

5. Eek!
That's the one (okay, one of many) things that freak me out about the South. I grew up in the Adirondack foothills, where generally there's nothing in the woods or lawns or fields that can hurt you (outside of the normal bees, etc) just by being there minding your own business.

Chiggers. Grrrrr.

10. Yes
my neighbor's son (eight years old) got them on his privates so badly they took him to the emergency room.

Things were wayyyyy too swollen for an eight year old, let's just say that.

19. Chiggers
Vaseline will also suffocate the little buggers. It takes a bit longer, but it doesn't take your skin off with it.

Next time, pull your sock tops up over your pants cuffs, tie your bootlaces around them and spray like bloody hell.

29. Please be aware that chiggers are ticks and can carry lime disease
So, this is potentially serious. Perhaps a visit to your doctor would be wise. I really don't mean to be an alarmist but I have a dear friend who has lime disease and she never had the telltale ring on her skin. Be well and take care.

30. Hey, is this why my ankles itch like a mofo at night? They are mostly
okay all day, but as soon as I take off my shoes and pants getting ready to go to bed in the evening I itch like crazy, mostly ankles just above the line where my sox end (I usually wear low cut socks), and to a degree on the calves and inside of my knees too.

I figured it just had something to do with dry skin and the temperature change taking off clothes at the end of the day, but reading all these chigger threads makes me wonder...

31. The Chiggers are insane this year
My kids and I look like we have some disease. We are supposed to canoe the Elk River in a few hours ( which is why I'm up at 3 am typing here...hmmmmm) and my daughter is afraid to show her gamey legs.

Tips: Zinc Oxide or Desitin. Messy but effective. And always shower after coming in from grassy areas. They don't latch on right away so yu can hose them off. Sorry, Moonbeam. Nothing itches as bad as a chigger bite. The gift that keeps on giving.....

Nothing helps except time (about a week and a half) and lanicane. You know, the anti-itch medication. It will become your friend.
