Why do women wear dresses/skirts?
Did a woman invent the dress? Do you like wearing them? What do you like about them?

Is it a cultural thing - where you wear dresses because that's what everyone does. Or do you actually like them?

I'm not sayin' there's anything wrong with them. In fact, I love the fact that women wear them.

1. I think they look feminine and nice.
In the Summer, I wear a lot of long skirts with tank tops or t-shirts and sandals. In the Winter, I like short skirts (just above the knee) and boots.

2. Yes, I like dresses and skirts.
I have good legs, pants don't show them off.

Towards the end of next month I am going to a very fancy wedding. Having a great ball skirt and even better top to wear with it. Extremely festive, very feminine. Makes me feel good.

3. I'm short-legged, and skirts offer a little more margin of error than do
pants. If a skirt hits an inch or two lower than it should, no biggie (in most cases); if pants do, they need to be hemmed, and I suck at sewing and I don't want to deal with alterations.

I probably wear skirts/dresses three or four days a week.

I can also look damn good in the right dress, if I say so myself.

4. At one time everyone wore them
Greeks, Romans etc

Today only the pope, judges and so on do.

Oh and women.

Except for me.

Drafty, impractical, nonsensical item of clothing I have long since discarded.

5. I like wearing them now that we don't have to wear pantyhose and
such.

Easy to move in, cooler here in Hell!

I like skirts, dresses less so.

34. I agree.
I avoid pantyhose at all costs. Sometimes tights in the Winter, but I'm an antiquated (well, not really since I'm in my early 30's) stockings and garter person. They're much sexier and much more comfortable as well. They can be hard to find, but last week, I got 4 pairs of stockings for $13. I was very happy. Plus, if you get a run in one leg, you don't have to throw out the whole pair. :7

36. well
i'm not THAT old at 49, but i remember wearing garter belts/hose before the invention of pantyhose. they were ghastly and uncomfortable too. but if you're wearing them for the "sexiness", do your thang!

37. I've seen some of the ones my mom had from the 60's.
She's only 55 and she is a person who never threw anything out and from what I saw, a lot of the ones in the 60's were these tight, girdle-like apparatus things. :scared:
Many of the ones now aren't so bad, much more comfy, but yeah, my "thang" has had some good feedback as well.

6. It's Historical, I Understand
Long ago, when baths were uncommon, women's private parts needed to be open to the air to avoid yeast infections. Underwear was not worn. Skirts were long.

That historical reason has evaporated. Now it's a matter of style and preference.

7. LOLOLOL
Women's parts were never open to the air. Corsets, bloomers, crinolines...are you kidding??

And air doesn't do anything for yeast infections.

Skirts show off a woman's legs now. That's all.

14. And what's wrong with that?
I've always been a leg man myself - just nuttin' sexier than pretty legs on a woman.

10. Cant beat a cotton dress in midwest heat
When its god awful hot with killer humidity you will find me in one of my long loose cotton dresses. No binding, lots of air flow (I like the ones that have slits on the sides, even more air). Cant beat them in the heat. Needless to say, no pantyhose either.

38. I went to school in South GA - there was no air conditioning
my senior year we had a heat wave in April and that's when my friends and I discovered how much cooler skirts were.

Besides, they look nice.

As for historical reasons, probably they were easier to make when people made their own clothes?

40. Take a "History of Costume" class at your nearest college
with a fashion or costume design department.

As for me, I wear dresses when the occasion calls for it; because it's easier to pee; and it's easier to make out in the car :-)

42. I found out another reason today.
Fast service in a hardware store. I had to pick up some new line for the weed trimmer thingy and I was wearing a short skirt and I had two sales dudes rush to the door when I walked in saying, "Can I help you?" I was never helped and finished quite that quickly in a hardware store before! Usually when I go into to places like that, I'm out of something in the middle of a project in overalls with paint in my hair and trying to get help is much tougher. I think the last time I was there in fact, I waited a good 20-30 minutes just to get a can of paint mixed. Not fair, maybe, but reality sometimes.
