Poll question: Favorite Gene Pitney song?
Friday night nostalgia -

Underrated singer with a distinctive voice. Certainly deserves the acclaim accorded to Roy Orbison.

8. Mecca
always like this one ...

(opening instrumental--chiefly Indian fakir's flute)

I live on the West side, she lives on the East side of the stree-ee-eet
And though they say that East is East and West is West
And never the twain shall meet
Each morning I face her window and pray that our love can be
'cause that brownstone house where my baby lives
Is Mecca (Mecca, Mecca, Mecca) Mecca (Mecca, Mecca) to me-e-e-e-e-e.

Oh she's my dream goddess and her ruby lips are so div-i-ine
And though her folks say we're too young to know of love
I worship at her shrine
Each morning I face her window and pray that our love can be
'cause that brownstone house where my baby lives
Is Mecca (Mecca, Mecca, Mecca) Mecca (Mecca, Mecca) to me-e-e-e-e-e.

(instrumental interlude-chiefly guitar)

Each morning I face her window and pray that our love can be
'cause that brownstone house where my baby lives
Is Mecca (Mecca, Mecca, Mecca) Mecca (Mecca, Mecca) to me-e-e-e-e-e.

(ending instrumental-chiefly Indian fakir's flute)

10. Voted "Other" by mistake
Would've voted for DMH had I seen it in time. INCREDIBLY hip of you to include it! Some other obscure worthies:
TEARDROP BY TEARDROP
ALADDIN'S LAMP
YESTERDAY'S HERO
NOT RESPONSIBLE
TRUE LOVE NEVER RUNS SMOOTH
HALF HEAVEN HALF HEARTACHE

and let's not forget his other contributions, like writing "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson, and playing hot shit drunken piano on the Stones' first LP. :toast: Gene's the man.

12. The one that was played incessantly in the fall of 1968
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 11:54 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
when I was carpooling to the University of Minnesota was "Billy You're My Friend."

Billy you`re my friend
Let me tell you what I saw
I saw you in the park
Walking mysteriously in the dark

When I looked again
I saw you weren`t alone Bill
You had a girl by your side
Was then I realized she was mine

I was hurt
Eyes could not believe what they saw
Ears could not believe what they heard
But they just bent with every word they heard

It`s absurd cos
Billy you`re my friend
We grew up together
How could you do this to me

Billy you`re my friend
Now that I`ve told you what I saw
I think I`ll be on my way
There seems to be nothing more to say
Billy you`re my friend

But actually, I prefer Town Without Pity and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
