I am very proud of my young nephew, Eric. He's a bright, talented kid who could succeed in just about anything. He amazed us all when he followed his dreams to Hollywood. Over the past few years he has made the most of every opportunity and is clearly a rising star. His acting skill and comic wit have landed him some impressive roles, each one leading to yet another opportunity.
One of the most promising and lucrative parts was as the co-host of a movie series on a cable network. We were looking forward to seeing his debut tomorrow night. He was flown to Atlanta to tape the first episode. On the set, he learned that he was to do the introduction to a U.S. Army recruiting spot. Eric has not been blinded by the bright lights of Hollywood and has joined his family in our opposition to the senseless war in Iraq. Without hesitation, he advised the production crew that he had an ethical problem being involved in the recruiting of more cannon fodder for George Bush's war. He suggested that his female co-host do the intro. It was taped that way and Eric flew back to Hollywood, his integrity intact.
Tonight I learned from my sister that the Army was outraged that their commercial wasn't being introduced by a buff young action hero figure, the type they need so desperately to replace the fallen. They flew the female host back to Atlanta to redo the show with someone who looks more like a recruiting poster doing the lead-in to their propaganda. Eric has paid a small price for being the kind of person we love and admire. This gig is over for him. He'll continue his climb to stardom, but I don't know that I could ever be more proud of him than I am tonight.
