I think it's bad. Not just because I love looking in that general direction, but because it makes the socks smelly.

William Shatner might. I gathered he was one of a few Star Trek actors of the time to do the sock trick... I'm glad Gary Lockwood wasn't, his pants ripped in the front when he recorded the Kirk pilot story "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Well, depending on the camera angle, "Where A Cameraman Has Now Gone" might have been the working title... :D

the title of which was "Look -- David Lee Roth Owns Two Pairs of Blue Socks!"

Why blue socks? Dunno. Funny enough to stick with me for over 25 years, though.

bachelors' manual very well. It clearly indicates there is a connection between underwear and socks but they are going about it all wrong.

Early in the spring, when the weather has finally broken and longjohns can at last be shed, new underwear and socks should be purchased at J.C. Penney. Socks are to be worn on feet until holes appear at toes, at which time they are to be pulled up and basted (or sewn, by the more experienced Girlie men) to underwear. New socks are then put on and the process is repeated until winter, when you will be set with a standup pair of longjohns. Simple.
