3. He's the best!
I went to the same high school as he did (although 20 years later) and agree with him that some of the best food in the country is to be found in Kansas City! He never fails to crack me up.

4. Book signing
Last Tuesday he autographed two books for me in Castine Me.
This is in the newest, "Obliviously on He Sails",
but it's so funny I have to post it. Paraphrasing:

The first time he saw Richard Perle on TV, knowing nothing
about him, he said to himself: That guy was pushed around by a
bully in the 4th grade and now he's not going to let anyone
push him around. Trillin wrote up the whole story, naming
streets and even the Bully, and published it in the Nation.
He freely admitted that he made up every detail.

Later, an acquaintance called him. The acquaintance said his
wife had attended grammar school with Perle in Los Angeles and
wanted to know, "How did you find this out?"

Trillin's reply was, "You mean it's true!?" He
concluded, "You can't even make up a slander about these
guys."
