MST3K...how many fans here on DU?
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 06:21 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
The "crap movie" thread reminded me...

My all time favorite show is MST3K...it was one of Comedy Central's first original programs and is credited for saving the network from becoming another Nick at Nite, rehashing old shows.

I really regret I didn't tape the seasons until after it went to SciFi channel. I have bought a lot of the old episodes sold through Rhino, and taped just about everything during the Mike years.

My absolute favorite..I'd have to say a tossup between Manos and Puma Man. Any other absolute favorites from the DU folks? MKJ

BTW..I have to add this...Al Gore once said that MST3K is his favorite show. (this was trumpeted on the MST3K website for quite a while)

Edited to add the Al Gore info.

1. "You're the guy with all the words!" That's from my new favorite MST3000
movie--"The Girl in Gold Boots." It's on their DVD collection #4. About go-go dancers in the 60's in L.A. Need I say more?????????

As for Manos, that movie is so bad I can't even watch the MST3000 wise-cracking version!!!!!!!!!!!

5. Go-go dancers are cool!
Ever see the Wild, Wild World of Batwoman? It's got these girls who just break out in go-go dancing for no reason. It's like whenever the movie got slow, the director told them to dance.

Crow also said it was like 5 different movies were put in a blender. :D

I mean, it was like Americans making fun of what they thought Chinese sounded like. It was so fucked up in that kind of way only cheesy movies from the '50s-'60s could be. Comedy gold.

I liked the recycling of the Mole People too hehe.

file sharing services. WINMX always has a great selection.

mst3k was probably the funniest show ever made. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during their writing process.

The hardest one to watch was an odd Japanese crazyass teen rangers meet the Thunderbrids. It was so awful I shut it off.

20. Have you been to the Digital Archive Project?
http://mst3k.dapcentral.org/index.php

If you want to download eps it's a much better option than trying to go through WinMX/KazaaLite/etc. It's slightly more complicated and uses eDonkey (so you've got to deal with queues), but it's worth the extra hassle.

BitTorrent is also good for finding MST3k eps. Here's a link to get you started: http://mst3k.booyaka.com/bittorrent_guide.shtml

3. Mitchell!
That's one of my most quoted eps. It's given me one of my favorite riffs ever, "Our hero, ladies and gentlemen".

Horror at Party Beach was another hilarious one. "Eulabelle, you silly Negro!" I use "_____, you silly Negro!" so much with my family that I've gotten people who don't even watch MST3k saying it. :D

The old, really bad kaiju movies, Joe Don Baker movies, and the Steve Reeves Hercules movies are my favorite eps.

I like Joel and Mike equally. I used to prefer Joel but Mike grew on me, I think they are both funny in different ways. In my case I think I just had to get used to Mike, though I know others like you that don't watch anything with him in it.

I still skip past the host segments in the Mitchell episode though, it's just sad to see Joel go.

Funny ass movie though. "She was gonna end up smelling like beer anyway."

37. Aw man that sucks.
What a bummer. :( Sci-Fi really jerked the show around, though. They were constantly changing its time slot so it was hard to find. IIRC they also had a rule that they had to riff strictly on sci-fi movies, which meant a lot of cheese classics fell through the cracks, and explains the dearth of shorts in the Sci-Fi channel period.

Sometimes I really hate Sci-Fi channel.

50. No clue.
There were a handful of things that slipped through. The German TV production of Hamlet was another one (I guess you could argue it had some supernatural elements to it, but that's a bit of a stretch).

I like to think they just relaxed it for some things. As crappy as the network generally is, they at least caved in to fan pressure and put their logo on the other side of the screen so it stopped covering up Crow.

All these 40's sedans driving around with giant 8' diameter silver globes on top of them.
Cop #1: "We can find them with the radar!"
Cop #2: "I don't believe in radar!"
Joel & bots: "BLASPHEMER! KILL THE HERETIC!"
And then later in the movie, all the cops are out chasing the bad guys, and there's a scene of 20 or so cop cars speeding along the road:
Joel: "Calling all cars-be on the lookout for donuts. Investigate Winchell's"
God I love that one...

30. I have seen all but 21 of the episodes
And am currently in various stages of downloading at least 10 more episodes (the people file sharing don't always have them available). Started watching in college. Bought the tapes; taped the Sci-Fi episodes, and then started downloading and burning the episodes onto CDs. If any episodes I've downloaded make it to DVD/VHS, I gladly buy that since the quality will be better.

One of my favorites is from the Sci-Fi episodes - "Jack Frost" which was a Russo-Finnish production of some of their legends in their culture I'm guessing. It concerns a beautiful girl with a wicked step-mother and step-sister and some guy with incredible strength that pisses off a mushroom-wizard who turns his head into that of a bear, and their (pretty girl and strong guy's) whirlwind romance that culminates when Jack Frost (who's in charge of flocking trees with snow in the winter) accidentally kills her until she's awoken with a kiss from the strong guy who has now learned humility. I think I would actually enjoy the film by itself just because it's at least somewhat well put together and interesting, but Mike and the Bots make it that much better.

71. Over here!
HUGe MST3k fan with HUGE collection of Comedy Dentral episodes on tape. I think I have evry one except 12 of them. I even have a few season one episodes (no KTMA episodes, though.).

I'd love to trade the CC episodes for some sci-fi channel episodes, seeing as the only ones I have dfrom the sci-fi channel days are the ones that were released on DVD. Can somebody help me out?

Oh, and my favorite MST 3K episode of all time? "The Starfighters."
