5. But I don't like war games.
I clicked on your link and read through some of the threads. Oh boy. I was consumed with an inexplicable urge to post. Fortunately, my better sense dragged my fingers away from the keyboard. It's 5:33am, and the rest of DU would be shaking and rattling from the concerted machine gun fire, grenades, and nukes launched my way if I did.

:nuke:

10. That's a fully automatic weapon, legally a machinegun
It was not covered by the now-defunct AW ban.

Importation of new machineguns for the civilian market was stopped in 1986. Only a licensed machinegun dealer could get one here legally. The AW ban had nothing to do with that particular weapon.

20. No way - I doubt very much that any version will be importable
It would have to meet the National Firearms Act requirements for minimum barrel length and minumum overall length. Those are probably surmountable BUT...

IMPORTATION

The prohibition on the importation of non-sporting firearms under 18 U.S.C. section 922(l) and 925(d)(3) still applies....

Those sections define what constitutes a legally importable firearm.

See the BATFE's official fact sheet on the death of the AW ban, released this morning at http://www.atf.gov/firearms/saw-factsheet.htm

http://www.atf.gov - Lots of good information from the most authoritative source available.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's a lot more to US gun control laws than most people realize.

11. not to mention *too short*
under Federal law dating back to 1934 (the National Firearms Act ("NFA")), any rifle (i.e a firearm with a shoulder stock that's not a shotgun) must have a barrel length of 16" and an overall lenght of at least 28". To possess such short firearms, you need to:

- identify the exact firearm you want to buy and note the individual serial number
- Request a special application from BATFE for NFA firearms
- Fill it out (including references, serial #, etc.)
- Get the chief law enforcement officer for your city/county/state to sign off on the application (depending on who your state designates for signing these particular applications)
- submit the application with a $200 tax fee
- wait 3 months or so for BATFE's approval or rejection
- take the approved application and tax certificate to firearms dealer specially licensed by BATFE to sell these types of firearms
- have that dealer record the serial number and send paperwork straight to BATFE so they can register you ownership of said firearm
- take the firearm home, and pray to god no one steals it (lest you be in hot water with BATFE for violating the law requiring safe storage of NFA firearms). Don't forget the impending civil suit by the family of the people slain/injured by your unsecured NFA firearm.

The same process is used for full-auto machine guns (like you have pictured here), however, Federal law bars the said registration of any machinegun made after 1986.

16. that's news to BATFE
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 03:00 PM by Romulus
since slapping a shoulder stock on to a Glock makes it a "short barrelled rifle."

(I guess I was off by 2 inches on the "overall length" thing).

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#m17

M25) If a person has a pistol and an attachable shoulder stock, does this constitute possession of an NFA firearm?

Yes, unless the barrel of the pistol is at least 16 inches in length (and the overall length of the firearm with stock attached is at least 26 inches). However, certain stocked handguns, such as original semiautomatic Mauser "Broomhandles" and Lugers, have been removed from the purview of the NFA as collectors' items. <27 CFR 179.11>

also they provide a "mini FAMAE" that has no stock.

i worked w/ BATF briefly. they will have no interest in these items, i assure you.

14. M-14...
Long Range, accurate, still the choice of many Delta Force operators. I used an M-14 in competition when I was a teen (Dad tried to make me into a NRA poster child...no way!) very nice weapon. I really liked the fact that the only thing that rifle was going to hit in it's life was paper... :)

You even think dirty thoughts and the M16 jams!

BTW...converted my Dad a few years back...100% Dem and an NRA life member! :toast:
