2. Because in his day, the gulf between classical and pop
wasn't so wide, and a lot of his stuff is quite good.

Offhand, I recall Victor Herbert and Ernst Korngold from that era as being successful in both the classical and commercial spheres--sort of like Leonard Bernstein was in my generation.

3. That's where we filed him in my music store days.
Rhapsody in Blue definitely has that feel to it.

More sort of post-modern classical, but I think he could be considered that.

4. Yes, he could be considered modern classical.
He is also played on Easy Listening stations. I'd be okay with him on either. I love Gershwin.
