My father bought a Prius :-), and is voting for Bush :-(
My father is a huge envronmentalist, but after our talk tonight, I realize that he is (in his words) voting for the devil he knows rather than the devil he doesn't know. He doesn't feel that Kerry has said anything, and he really faults his vote for the Iraq resolution (even though it was Bush that wanted the ^*%*$X# thing).

I may never be able to get him to vote for Kerry. But he DID say he might vote for Nader (:wtf:). I am printing out Kerry's voting record on the environment as we speak. Other suggestions?

I have seven weeks to keep him from making a stupid mistake in a swing state.

2. a huge environmentalist supporting Bush?
jeez, what does he think of the LCV? they endorsed Kerry early on and he has a lifetime record of 92 from them. Jeez man, that sucks. He says hes gonna vote for Bush but might vote for Nader, speaking of Nader, I finally got to hear him speak today in his acceptance speech, wasnt pretty I must say, I got so damn mad. Good luck trying to get him to vote for a great dem, Kerry.

4. Remind him that a small business owner
can buy a SUV and take up to $100,000 off of their taxes. If they buy a Prius they can only take about $2000 off. Bush/Cheney energy policy really makes sense...not.

7. If your father's an environmentalist
How could he even think about voting for Bush?

This the Bush adminstration environmental agenda in a nutshell:

-roll back regulations on industrial pollution

-open national forests for logging

-open national parks for oil drilling

8. Better to have him vote for Nader if he won't vote Kerry
It's better to have a republican ditch the party in favor of Nadir instead of a Dem, though it'd still be best if Kerry got the vote.

10. If your dad is an environmentalist, here's how I would go about it:
Kerry has about the best environmental record of any senator ever..one of the highest scores.

He is well aware of the fact that our current global crisis is due to our dependence on foreign oil. Many oil companies will say "but if America doesn't buy that oil, someone will!." That is not true...it is only true for countries whose economies are OIL BASED!

Bush has the WORST environmental record of any modern day president.

Kerry has stated that we are lacking DIPLOMACY in our foreign policy..he is correct...North Korea is a threat and Iran does not seem to be too concerned with us...why? Ask your father given the current mess in Iraq if he believes we can win a war in Afghanistan (where Al Queda is now STRONGER) Iraq, Iran AND NOrth Korea? What if China decides to mess with us after we have committed ourselves to even more? Does he really want to take that risk? Don't those two oceans around us look a bit smaller now?

11. As you said, you have seven weeks
Just keep pointing out the flaws in his thinking for supporting Bush. I don't suppose he's a complete idiot, so keep working on him. It will be a fine day when he says, "You know, you're right. Bush really isn't the man I took him for. Kerry would do a superior job in just about every way I can think of."

12. These links might help
You can get daily updates on bushco's crimes against the environment here http://www.bushgreenwatch.org/ and these guys http://www.lcv.org/ have a ton of info on both Kerry's and bush's environmental records.

If he considers himself an environmentalist he should be pretty easy to persuade to vote for Kerry.

13. Has your dad even bothered to try to research Sen. Kerry? Kerry's website
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 06:40 PM by w4rma
has all of his positions explained in detail. In much more detail than big media will allow them explained.

Imho, you should take your dad to your computer and browse Kerry's campaign website with him for about 30mins or so:

http://www.johnkerry.com/

In particular, browse through the text of Sen. Kerry's speeches, that big media usually talk over while he gives them.

20. On election day call and tell him you're on the way to the hospital....
Don't tell him which one....then hang up.
Call after the polls close and tell him you're OK now.

That sounds mean, but he won't make a serious voting mistake and he WILL be getting great milage.

25. I think I got him.
I printed out Kerry and Bush's environmental records from the Sierra Club website. When I showed then to my dad he said, "Yeah, but Kerry's going to vote the same way when he gets into office." SO I said, "So you're going to vote for the guy who's PROVEN to be terrible on the environment vs. the guy who's got the best voting record on the environment in the Senate, becuase you think he's no different?"

His response? "Yeah, well..."

Seven weeks? I've GOT him.

27. Ay-yi-yi
get Kerry's plans for different issues that you think your dad cares about off his website. Boil them down to the major points in a MS word document (it's easy if you cut and paste).

Then get bush's record and plans for the environment (LOL) off his website and other sources. Show him THAT shit.

Does he KNOW about what bush has done to the environment??? If he cares so much about the environment he wouldn't dare vote bush.

If that's the same guy, when I was a junior in high school, guys used to go around and just spontaneously break out into "hey now, HEY now...don't DREAM it's over..." in the hallways of my school.

(Weird kids. It was the 80s, what can I say?)

38. Did you go...
to the league of conservation voters?

they rate politicians on their voting records for the environment. it's based totally on voting records. Kerry gets a 92%.

And of course, Bush has never seen a resource he didn't want to extract (okay, got that from my mr. mair)

It's non-partisan so even moderate repubicans (another endnangered species under the bush admin) get props when they vote in favor of environmental legislation.
