Non perishable food that can be eaten raw... Suggestions?
Looks like Ivan is going to kill the power round here pretty soon. What groceries should I buy that will keep without refrigeration and taste o.k. raw (total electric apartment?)

Any and all advice is appreciated!

1. Canned nuts.
High in protein, non-perishible and tasty. I like cashews.

2. Hang in there!
I think canned corn and green beans taste fine straight out of the can. Also canned tuna, salmon & chicken.

Good luck - hope it doesn't hit you too hard.

6. spam!
fresh fruit

jerkey

you can also store some cold stuff: use a cooler. right now, before the power goes out, fill up a bunch of bottles with fresh water and freeze them. Blocks like that say frozen a LOOOONNNG time, and when they finally melt you have fresh water.

Good luck!

16. I would go for deviled ham before SPAM though
Everyone knows that SPAM stands for (Should Propably Appear Meatlike) :).

Get deviled ham, chicken salad, tuna, hell you can get canned salmon for that matter :).

Which reminds me, smoked salmon is also good to keep around :)

12. Beef jerky :)
Seriously though, get yourself some Progresso soups (don't require water, unlike Campbells), they work okay (not excellent cold, but not deadly) :). Also see if you can find some cans of sterno or a single burner propane stove, you can use them if necessary to cook with (the single burner propane stove is extremely cheap, probably $20 for the stove and $5 for the fuel), but should not be used indoors).

If you can obtain the camp stove, then you can open up all kinds of possibilities for food (including pancakes and the like).

Also set aside plenty of drinking water if possible. As much as you can.

13. Remember to buy a manual can opener if you don't have one already
Canned goods are no good if all you have is an electric opener.

14. Most anything canned, I think?
As long as the can sucks in air, rather than blows it out, you should be able to eat it raw, I think. You may have a hard time eating cold soups or chili that way, but fruits and vegetables should be easier to chow down on. And of course the longer you go, the easier it'll be to spoon up that Hormels extra hot with beans.

It could take an apocalypse to get you to eat Alpo, though. (See "The Road Warrior" for details.)

15. Well this goes without saying
but you need to have a manual can opener!

I ate tepid soup, crackers and canned tuna for 3 days after Isabel. Tuna and canned garbanzo beans make a surprisingly tasty combination. What I missed most is ice. Get some ice for your refridgerator. (I keep a bag in my freezer, just in case. What you miss the most is cold drinks when the air goes off and you have to deal with that moist tropical air for days on end.

18. tuna, (I prefer packaged), bread, peanut butter, blendable powdered
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 02:47 PM by hlthe2b
shakes (mix with water), apples, pears, other fruit, dry cereals, pretzels, chips, nuts, ramen or other soup mix (could heat water on propane grill), crackers, snack cheese/cracker combos, various jerkey products....

Good luck!

BTW, if you can get ahold of one of those little mini sterno stoves (or a camping propane or butane stove), you'd have a lot more options.

and then fill with regular ice. You can make it up to 7 days if you do it right!

Also, make sure you have plenty of gas and go get some cash to have on hand when banks are closed and ATMs aren't working.

Refill any prescriptions that are running low also.

Only problem is...it made me hungry.

Do you have anything in there about how to stir fry? I do ok, but I often end up with mushy vegetables. I usually use a 12" Revere copper-clad frying pan. Last night I tried an aluminum electric skillet at 380 degrees. I got interrupted and accidentally burned the vegetables, so I don't think that was a valid test.

edit: I think I found it

34. I get frozen stir-fry veggies, defrost in microwave, and stir-fry
until just hot enough to eat.

This may be heresy to stir-fry purists, but it works for me.

Never has mechanically separated chicken, beef tripe, partially defatted cooked beef fatty tissue, beef hearts, water, partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue, salt; and less than 2 percent mustard, natural flavorings, dried garlic, dextrose, sodium erythorbate, and sodium nitrite tasted so good! :9
