Anyone here ever read 'The Picture of Dorian gray?"
Debating on reading it. I have been reading so mnay political books lately I need a break!finished Bill Clinton's 'My Life', "Bush Must Go" & "Bushworld". I am burnd out wi/Bush books (althought I may get the audio cd of Kitty Kelly's new book)

I have been thinking about Dorian Gray for awhile now. I have never any of Oscar Wilde's books & was just curious if Dorian Gray is a good read. Anyone?

1. It's quite good and eerily parallels our society's current obsession
with looks and outward appearances. I think you'll like it.

But if you're looking for something a bit more light and entertaining, several of Wilde's plays, including the Importance of Being Ernest, are wonderful comedy.

2. It's worth the read, and quite short if you don't like it
It always gave me the creeps, though.

3. I had a nightmare based on "Dorian Gray"
just last week. Sad. Even my dreams are derivative...

4. EXCELLENT Story
Well worth reading. Also then see the old, 1920s or 30's movie with Angela Landsbury. Very good story--one of my favorites :)

5. yes i read it years ago
and it is good, but like edith wharton's works, i find the pages-long descriptions of minutiae in a room to be tedious at times...there was a movie with george saunders and Angela Lansbury (her mom plays a bit part too) i think-i am not looking on imdB but you might be able to rent the movie...the story is a good one...

6. It is a fabulous book
I loved it from beginning to end.
And I agree - the Angela Landsbury movie is fantastic. I almost didn't recognize ol' Jessica Fletcher.

You should definintely read this one. You can do it in a day.

7. I think of Poppy Bush as a Dorian Gray type
and the Chimp too for that matter.

yes I have read it more than once. It is an excellent story that applies to our time now. Babs would be Dorian Gray in reverse.

8. I LOVE Dorian Gray and Oscar Wilde in general.
Wilde has so many quotable quotes in that story, LOL.
Great story, great writer.

9. Hmmmmm...
Or if you don't want to buy or rent the book and you don't mind reading things at the computer, http://www.upword.com/wilde/dorgray.html.

Since The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I've wondered where the persona known as Dorian Grey came from.

10. very good book, lotsa 'code language' though
as you know, wilde was openly gay, and such an exuberant presence it was quite cheerfully tolerated even in those times...his work, especially '...dorian gray' never mentions the unmentionable stuff, but you don't have to read too deep to get the drift....
btw another excellent work from long ago is jonathan swift's 'gulliver's travels'....it is absolutely amazing how open minded and sophisticated they were in 1728's! (gulliver pisses to put out a fire in lilliputian palace lol)!

11. You'll love it
I agree with switching gears in reading but even though this is none-too-recent fiction IMHO, it still has a very contemporary and relevant message. Oscar Wilde is awesome.

12. I have!
And I have to say that I love it. Love Oscar Wilde. Go for it; it's a good break from all the political stuff!
