Dad Charged After 2-Year-Old Gets Drunk
Dad Charged After 2-Year-Old Gets Drunk
Girl's Blood Alcohol Level Was 0.14

POSTED: 1:14 pm EDT September 15, 2004

FAIRFIELD, N.Y. -- A central New York man faces child endangerment charges after his 2-year-old daughter got drunk.

State police said the girl was treated Sunday at a hospital for a blood alcohol level of -- nearly twice the legal limit for an adult.

Troopers said Eric Carney was at a friend's house when he gave his daughter a taste of beer. He said she probably drank more on her own while he wasn't looking.

When he returned the toddler to her mother, she noticed that something was wrong. She took the girl to Little Falls Hospital, where doctors determined the child was intoxicated.

2. " nearly twice the legal limit for an adult" is misleading
That's for driving. They make it sound as though having that much alcohol in your blood is illegal.

5. What's your point?
Any level of alcohol in a two year old should be illegal.

(BTW blood alcohol levels are for public intoxication as well, not just for driving...basically it is illegal to be in a public place with that much alcohol in your system).

7. My point is that I'm annoyed when people say twice the legal limit...
when there is nothing inherently illegal about having that much alcohol in one's blood.

And IIRC public intoxication needs some kind of behavioral transgression before one can be charged with it, so if you just happen to be sitting there with a high BA level, you can't be arrested for public drunkeness.

10. Well, not exactly...
In the college towns here the police will do 'walk throughs' at the bars. They can ask anyone to do a Breath Test for any reason. So a person who has above a .08 not doing anything wrong can in fact get arrested for public drunkeness.

Still, having a child with a level of alcohol above the legal limit is just WRONG.

13. It's part of the crack-down on underage drinking
I guess a heavy police presence will stop the drunks from misbehaving....that's why there's riots a Homecoming and VEISHA

8. Yes and no
I have no problem with kids drinking a bit of wine for cultural or religious reasons.

But yes, feeding a kid beer just to get the kid drunk should be illegal regardless of the amount of alcohol in her blood.

these types of rules weren't around in 1968.

My dad went to the Philippines, where he was stationed for a year and a half. My mom, older brother and I went to live with my grandmother down in the Rio Grande Valley.

My mom's younger sister and her boyfriend (later husband) were visiting, and McCall had a beer. He went to the kitchen to get a glass, came back and his beer was gone! I sat there looking a little bleary-eyed.

My fondness for beer began right then and there. Delicious!

How much alcohol does it take to be poisoned? This little girl and her family were lucky. :(

14. i drank when i was that age and younger.
and all through growing up. and i rarely got drunk, never concentrated on finding alcohol as a teen, and have maybe 2-3 drinks a year as an adult, sometimes more sometimes less.

it sounds like an accident. now if he was FEEDING her loads of alcohol-that would be wrong. the thing about beer is that it is shown to be extremely tasty to toddlers-so it's not a good thing to leave unattended.
