How did you find DU?

I found it through either Michael Moore's site or the late, lamented, Media Whores Online.

I was specifically looking for a site like this; when I saw the home page, I knew I'd found a home!

I read the "Top 10 Conservative Idiots" list for several weeks before I ventured over into the forums. I registered in October '01, just a month after the 9-11 attacks, I believe. I was attending college at the University of North Texas, Re:puke: stronghold and looking anywhere I could for some folks who held views like mine.

I clicked a buzzflash link to an FR thread where they were getting on a suspected troll for being sent from DU. The visitor professed no knowledge of what DU meant, and neither did I until some freeper explained it later on in the thread.

I immediately checked it out and signed up and to the detriment of my work and family life have spent many, many hours here ever since.

24. First Found It In January Or February 2001

I first found DU I think very shortly after it came online. I don't remember exactly how; I discovered a number of other liberal and democratic web sites right at the same time.

I was a lurker for over a year, and then started posting in May 2002.

31. Believe it or not

I found DU by lurking at that site that shall not be named. A friend recommended that other site saying it was a great place to get the latest news. I lurked for a while mostly reading threads about non-political issues. I even posted once on a thread about SARS. It didn't take long for me to realize that those people are nucking futs!!! They frequently mentioned DU so I came over to see what the fuss was all about. DU is awesome!

(I am a registered Democrat, voted for Clinton and Gore, and I HATE Bush with a passion. I thought I better mention these things since I mentioned that other site. I don't want to be accused of being a troll!:-)

while I was grassrootin' it for Dean. I thought I'd check it out. Why anti Dean, I wondered. Where the du posters lefties (supporting Kucinich) or where the du posters dlc types? I'm still here trying to figure that out.

Then Dean swelled on the internet ( www.meetup.com , the war started and Dean basically said, "I don't trust this pResident") and the next thing I knew, DU was Dean country.

I don't remember exactly which one, but there was an alphabetically-ordered list of other liberal sites to one side of the page, and I began going down the list, clicking on each site and checking it out. I worked my way through Bartcop, Buzzflash, etc. and stopped at DU. I lurked for a couple months before feeling brave enough to join. I have been a member of a couple PC-related forums, but DU is my first political forum so I was a little nervous about registering, since I am something of a political neophyte, having only recently begun the arduous process of craniorectal-inversion reversal. :silly: :crazy: :dunce: I am still somewhat tentative about posting, but I like it here, and everyone seems very welcoming to us n00bs! 35. I'd been searching for a site like this in the months after 9/11

The only message board I was convinced existed was Free Republic and I wondered whether all the liberal message boards were now non-existent. There were a few liberal pages that I used to visit which now had closed down or were taking a break after 9/11

Finally I became so sick of the hate and vitriol being directed toward President Clinton that I entered in something like "Clinton was a wonderful President" which turned up a pro-Clinton webpage that directed me to this site

And friends had done the same for him. I've tried to return the favor. I knew that I had found a home when I received a lovely welcome by newyawker99 on my very first post. She had that greeting by a welcoming toddler and, while I had been anxious, I was no longer afraid. So first impressions do mean that much and this is the reason I always follow newyawker's advice and example, and welcome every new member. I welcome everybody I run across. I know how much it can mean.:shrug:
