Police: Democrat Punches Republican, Bush Cardboard Cutout

POSTED: 10:59 pm EDT September 18, 2004
UPDATED: 11:02 pm EDT September 18, 2004

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A Democrat is charged with punching a local Republican leader and a life-sized cardboard cutout of President George W. Bush, according to police.

Authorities say David Philip McCally, 55, is charged with misdemeanor battery and criminal mischief for the Thursday night scuffle.

McCally, an instructor at Sante Fe Community College, was headed to a restaurant when he stopped inside the nearby GOP headquarters and punched the presidential cutout.

McCally said he meant it in a lighthearted way. But Alachua County Republican Executive Committee chairman Travis Horn followed him outside the store, and the two exchanged words before fists few.

Police say McCally threw the first punch, and Horn suffered a cut lip and injured nose.

But in Horn's words: "If I have to take a beating every day for George W. Bush to be president, I'll do that."

ME: I wish I could take this guy up on his offer.

3. Horn wants a beating every day for GWB?
Send him up my way and we'll see what we can do to oblige him.

5. I you take his offer then * gets to be pResident
Notice he doesn't think voting has anything to do with who is pResident; only violence.

Actually the whole country and the Constitution are getting their collective asses kicked thanks to *'s policies.

And do I dare say it is a bad idea to walk into a GOP HQ and punch their cardboard cutouts. (I guess I just did.) Nothing good can come of an action like that.

6. I have two thoughts on this
I expect a little frustration on the part of folks who are fed up with GWB and his shit. You're right violence isn't the answer, unless it's in self defense. In a way you can argue that the tap on the cut out was his way of fighting back.

Second, I would love to take that Horn guy up on his offer, but only under the condition that we leave another GWB term up to the voters.
