1. Oh, please, there is only one section that matters: the strings
followed by the percussion.

The rest is all filler. Nice filler, and at times necessary, but still filler.

Except the bassoon and oboe - they are very important. But not as important as strings, and not quite as important as percussion.

But to be an orchestra, it has to have strings. Otherwise it's a band. So that's why i pick the strings. Plus the fact that brass is all suck-all instruments, except when put into an orchestra (or a real jazz band - meaning, not some half-ass large-ass high school jazz band, but a Coltraine or Arkestra or Don Ellis kind of jazz band).

And I love woodwinds, but again, can't have an orchestra without strings. And it should have percussion.

3. I like them all
There's a reason why an orchestra has all of those sections! Some pieces feature one area, where others feature another.

5. Brass- namely low brass
Trombone, baritone, tuba...the low end always counts. I played tuba in the band in high school, and symphonic band was always my favorite.

7. The lower woodwind section!
Which provides the soul of the woodwind section:
Bassoon
Contrabassoon
Bass Clarinet
English Horn

You don't always hear them, but when you do, they leave an indelible impression.

(and yes, I do play a couple of them...)

9. Hard question. But I will have to stick up for the oboist.
A. It is the most difficult instrument (shut-up french horn-est!).

B. It is the most beautiful sound in the orchestra.

C. Generally pays better than a generic violinist.

D. DemoTex is an accomplished oboist.

12. Percussion...
especially when Evelyn Glennie is playing!

The wildest thing: although Evelyn Glennie is one of the best classical percussionists working today, she's profoundly deaf since birth.
