Sha Na Na flop hurts Anderson Y

Associated Press
September 21, 2004

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson YWCA lost $20,000 over the weekend on a Sha Na Na concert fund-raiser, and the organization's leaders say they might have to cut staff or face closing.

Organizers had hoped 2,000 would show up for Saturday's concert at $20 a ticket to see the 1950s revival group, but only 289 attended, YWCA board President Connie Smith said

"During the Sha Na Na concert, the board was in the popcorn room saying, 'What can we do?"' Smith told The Herald Bulletin. "I feel stupid and mad. Sha Na Na was at Woodstock for Pete's sake, why wasn't anyone interested?"

Maybe it's because no one likes Sha Na Na?

1. I can't believe they are still around
They had a horrible show in the '70s. They made Tony Orlando, Mac Davis and Sonny and Cher look like they had really great, scintillating TV shows!

3. dang - also feel bad for sha na na
Can you imagine? Promoter says 2000 people are going to show up and 200 show up instead? I would look for a new day job.

5. I liked them pretty well
I remember one number, "Bad Boys", that was rather original and entertaining.

6. It's not Sha-Na-Na's fault they suck
Someone had their head seriously up their ass when they thought of this. They couldn't fill 2000 seats if they were giving tickets away.

"Organizers had hoped 2,000 would show up for Saturday's concert at $20 a ticket to see the 1950s revival group, but only 289 attended"

For a "plan B" these same organizers hoped that $100 bills would rain down from the sky.

Tonight's big benefit concert lineup:

Milli (of Milli-Vanilli fame)
William Shatner (his singing will scare away the Trekkies)
Billy Ray Cyrus
LaToya Jackson
and of course Sha-Na-Na

7. sort of OT but Bowzer is very active in democratic politics
He goes to the same Democracy for America Meet-up I do. He is totally cool. His nephew is head of the Los Angeles Democratic Party.

I don't think he is with the group anymore though.

9. I think one of them was in jail for
grand theft for a while. Myles Conner was stealing paintings like Rembrandts and stuff. He was allegedly connected to the big Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft in Boston in 1990 where the theives walked out with paintings valued at $300 million. I hope the YMCA didn't have any valuables.
