Paper carrier uses raft to reach flooded subscribers; is arrested
9/21/2004, 4:29 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — A plucky newspaper carrier and her father used a rubber raft to reach flooded subscribers — and both wound up in trouble with the law.

Betsey Patrick, a carrier for The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, delighted six stranded subscribers along the rain-swollen Conodoguinet Creek in Middlesex Township on Sunday when she and her father floated down Clemson Drive in the raft.

"The people were so excited," Patrick said Monday. "They couldn't leave their houses. It made their day."

But police and a state Fish and Boat Commission officer weren't amused, and cited her father, Rick Patrick, for negligent operation of a water craft. Betsey Patrick said she was arrested for disorderly conduct after arguing about the $220 citation.

1. They ought to be given a medal
I'm lucky if my paper carrier lands it on my front lawn. Every morning it's like an Easter egg hunt trying to find the paper.

3. Oh, for Pete's sake!
Reminds me of the mail service. Remember that little ditty they had about the mail - "Neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night can stay this courier from the faithful completion of his appointed rounds"? All I have to say to that is HA!

Used to live in Vermont and had this evil witch of a rural mail carrier. If there was half an inch of snow on the ground, she wouldn't deliver unless you had shoveled it away from the mailbox. I argued with her about it one day. She drove a 4 wheel drive Toyota pickup and I said, "you can drive right over it!"

"I'm not going to pack your snow down," she told me. "You have to pack your own snow!"

When I was a kid, sometimes the mail was the only traffic that would get through. They'd stop, get out and tromp through the snow to the box.

Makes you wonder why they "go postal". Seems like they don't have to do nearly as much as they used to!

8. I think it was a stupid thing to do. . .
And I'm glad she was fined.

The police have enough trouble dealing with people who are in trouble without having to chase down yahoos who try to make trouble by drowning themselves to deliver a paper.
