Help!! My dad is going insane!!!
Today is my SO's birthday. My SO went and got the mail, and discovered that my dad had sent him a birthday card. It's a standard American Greetings card, but I have to show you what it says (keeping in mind that my SO is male):

Imagine a woman
who is beautiful
and wise.
Who is admired
for her inner gifts,
and beloved
for her caring heart.
Imagine a woman
whose words
and smiles
hold gentle
healing power.
Imagine a woman
who is wished
so much good
that it would overflow
into a thousand
lifetimes...

then you open the card and it says:

That wonderful woman
is you.

But my dad scratched out "you" and wrote in "my daughter"!!!
Then it says,
Happy Birthday
Love,
"Dad"

:wtf:

What the heck is that about? Any ideas?????

9. No, I'm quite sure he's aware of which b-day is which
And the card came addressed to my SO.

3. Cute, if a bit weird
Don't try to find too much meaning in it. I think your Dad tried to make a personal statement of appreciation for your SO's fine taste in women, and didn't quite "hit the mark."

If you try too hard to figure such things out, you will eventually have to be fitted for a straitjacket.

4. Maybe he just confused your birthday with your SO's?
That's what it sounds like to me.

7. sounds like a joke
he's your dad not your so's. He probably thought it was cute to remind your partner of what a catch you are. Rather sweet really

10. If it is a joke, it's way out of character for him
That's why I'm a little disturbed.

8. Thinking Like A Man Here,
It's more likely that he FORGOT it was his son's birthday, and just sent a nice card to you, on his son's birthday, by coincidence.

11. I think he found a card that described you in his eyes, and wanted to
find an opportunity to use it. I think it was very sweet.

No offense to the posters who thought it sweet, but the card pays no homage to the birthday boy, just a poem how wonderful his own daughter is? What kind of birthday card is that? I don't blame Coventina for being baffled!

PS Happy birthday to your SO!

14. sounds like if your SO wants to see his next b-day, he better...
treat you right. That's my take on it because that's how my dad was. On my wedding day, he put his arm around my husband and said "welcome to the family, I'm proud to think of you as my son. If you ever hurt Gloria, I'll kill you". Old fashioned and wonderful. :)

:silly: I have no idea. You say it isn't in character for him, so I can't blame you for being perplexed.

18. your dad is ready for grandkids, hon!
THis is a not too subtle hint that he is ready for the SO to make an honest woman of you. I don't know why the grand-parenting "clock" is so strong in some people but it is. My own parents did nothing but complain about having kids -- choice was not an option when we were conceived -- but then some wires crossed in their brain and suddenly they were nagging endlessly for grand-kids. Fortunately, my sister popped one out and it really took the heat off of me.

One day you and your SO will get a good laugh out of this. I promise. At least it means that he approves of your choice of SO...
