Poll question: Songs hated by the cool kids that you secretly like
Except for #s 6 & 8, these aren't songs that I have any particular kick against and a couple of them I like a lot, but then I'd never make a cool kid. I could have put on real horrors, like "Afternoon Delight," "Muskrat Love," or "Feelings," but I figured I'd rather have ones that at least had a remote chance of garnering some votes. Theoretically I wouldn't mind changing out non-vote-getters in a little under an hour like I usually do, but I just can't imagine anybody replying, "How could you leave off THIS song everybody hates that I really love?!" On the other hand, DUers never fail to surprise me... :D

8. The cool kids, 30 years later, seem to have made a turnaround on ABBA
According to a poll I ran months ago (which I'd link to if we still have the archives), I'm the only person on DU who still hates ABBA.

because I loathe them. They are truly awful (and life is too short to waste on even a camp appreciation of those blow-dried twits)

9. Definitely "Come Sail Away"
I'm an unashamed Styx fan for sure! Although FWIW, I also like "Afternoon Delight" and "Feelings." And "Billy, Don't be a Hero" and "The Night Chicago Died" for that matter. Unfortunately, "Muskrat Love" is too pathetic even for me, though! haha

11. I wanna love you, the best that I caaannnnnnnnn....
I officially like four of their songs.
Hold My Hand, Everytime I look you I go blind (uh, don't think that's the name), and Time (you ain't no friend of miiinnee), and I only want to be with YOOOOOUOUUUU.

I had to hide my affection from my Pearl Jammie friends...

Somehow, though, every time I hear Hootie now it's that disgusting piece of poo Let Her Cry (or whatever).

Tiiimmmmmmeeee whyyy you punish mmeeeeeeeeeee.

of a Vancouver band called 54-40. They've been around for about as long as REM.

It does sound lyrically different than the rest of their songs, I was always mildly curious about it.

54-40 huh? Gonna check them out.

"Sara", too. The video is horrible, though. And I do like Jefferson Airplane a lot more, for whatever it's worth.

Maybe I'm just not the most discerning music listener out there...!

16. It's been pointed out that after "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
it's become a drag queen standard. This doesn't make it any less shitty, of course, but makes it relatively more acceptable as a sort of accidental high camp.

15. "Beach Baby" First Edition
I hadn't given the song a second thought for probably 20 years, then I watched "Scotland, PA" and there's this great time-lapse montage that unfolds to this sappy, overproduced imitation Beach Boys song, and it was a perfect film moment. Gave the song another day in court, and it DOES rule in that cheesey sort of guilty pleasure way.

17. None. I don't secretly like any songs hated by cool kids.
In my case, there's nothing secret about it. :P

Billy Ray Cyrus, "Achy Breaky Heart"
Aqua, "Barbie Girl"
Backstreet Boys, "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)"
Right Said Fred, "I'm Too Sexy"
Gerardo, "Rico Suave"
Oak Ridge Boys, "Elvira"
Barney, "I Love You"
Disney's "Macho Duck"

I'm proud to say that I have all of these songs on mp3 file format, and when I still had an office job I would play them at work to torture my co-workers. All of these songs have a special place in my heart.

25. Not sure kids, cool or otherwise are listening to much Welk or Al Hirt
but back in the day, Welk was certainly the leading symbol of unhipness. (Not a blast, mind you; I like nearly all big band better than Welk, but he played a role in keeping the music alive, so I guess I'm grateful.)

You're a freethinker who knows what you like and ignores how others may perceive what you like or how they may perceive you for liking them.

Then again, maybe I'm just saying that because I like most of them, too, and will latch on to all available allies to justify my "uncool" taste in music!
