So, I'm trying to pump myself up about maybe quitting my job tomorrow
Last Wednesday the Publisher said some things to me about the paper I didn't agree with. She's a nice person, but knows jack about this business. Since I took over, our paper's subscription and newstand sales have gone up. Yet, she tells me she wants it to be like it used to be.....what it used to be was a laughing stock.
So, if I go in tomorrow and she gives me a bunch O crap again, I think I shall cordially tenure my resignation.

Too Rash?

1. How's the job market by you?
It's silly to be so impulsive if it will take you a long time to find a job. Why don't you look to replace the job WHILE you're working? It's a lot easier to negotiate a higher salary if you are employed

Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 12:33 AM by HEyHEY
I can get by for a month or two now....

Didn't ya see my thread on that?

Anyway, I've got a couple of hook ups...I know it is madness but, I just can't be stepped on that way. I get stressed too easily.

Still a bit too young I guess

4. Yeah, I saw it
you still owe the money...and if you are unemployed as well...you will discover what real stress is.

She's in charge...do it her way.

This is no time to be a prima donna.

Prima donnas tend not to eat too often.

5. But by doing it her way I'll hurt my career
My name is attached to it. Plus, doing it her way is the wrong way.... and who does head office blame when the editorial section looks like shit? Not the publisher - the editor. She shouldn't even be sticking her nose in as much as she does, especially since she doesn't know what she's doing.
I figure I could probably get my old job at the city back next time they hire.
I know I'm being foolish. I just get so mad.

to worry about, if you DON'T do it her way.

That echinacea stuff is bunk. You're supposed to take it at the beginning of a cold right? Everytime I've done that...the cold explodes on me within 24 hours.

It's a scam I tellya!

I actually think I may have some vaporub up here...

21. Heh....
I know people who have practically drowned internally from drinking quarts of orange juice, on the theory that huge amounts of vitamin C will cure them.

It's a virus...ain't nuthin' gonna cure it.

We can't fix viruses yet. Unfortunately.

Just make yourself as comfy as possible.

6. Stick it out till you have another gig lined up.
And when you go, make sure you take a stack of post its and that little plastic paper clip holder, the one with the magnetic lip around the top.

8. Dude, hang in there. News is a whore biz, as we have discussed
before.
Bend over and take it, she's the boss.
It won't hurt you one bit. She will use KY, and IF you are lucky, lidocaine too.

12. What if a fucking asteroid lands on BC and california slides into
the sea?

Come on, everyone knows the shit publishers pull. You think it is any different anywhere else?

It was the same at Hearst, Hachette-Fillipaci, and Time for magazines and it was the same at every newspaper I worked at including the Gray Lady herself.

Drink the koolaid tomorrow. Don't worry, bubbie!

Tonight, drink the Johnny Walker, and go to sleep.

24. good, I'll go in there with a mean hangover and a cold
A force of attitude to be reckoned with!

The other though is she tries to use editorial to sell ads...which if I told head office would get her in big trouble.

11. Maybe you can give her what she really wants
instead of what she thinks she needs. What do you think about changing your approach? If the changes you made are the reason she sells more papers, you're making more money: she's got to listen to that. If she wants to have the old kitchy stuff back in, do you have a second section you can stick it in?

Of course, this is all based on the notion that you want to stay. If you want to go, go. Get out of town.

13. I already attempt to do that as much as I can
I keep all the hard news up front. Then the editorial page, then the letters and columnists...then the sports...then the crap.
But it's also the layout - she doesn't understand concepts like butting headlines being bad, and not printing a "Press release" from the local old folks home about what they did last weekend.

20. Well,
these things happen. People hang around long enough, and in the right environment, they end up running the place. Well, if she could make you do it, she would have by now, so to my way of thinking, it's up to you how much irritation you want to put up with, and for how long. I mean, you're not going to be here in, say, three years, right?

23. If I had it my way I wouldn't be there for three weeks
I was at first going to stay for two years. But I'm 25 and this is a small town with none my age, and I'm unhappy. I don't wish to waste these few years in a place being unhappy. As well, she meddles too much with editorial I.E. trying to sell ads by promising things to people.

25. I was in a similar situation
For three years, until I was 28, I was the under-compensated and under-respected art director for a weekly entertainment 48-pager. I can't tell you that you are not at an important stage of your career, but we all get these crappy jobs sometimes (especially in publishing!) I don't think it will hurt you as much as you think.

22. I think that
since you know you feel comfortable quiting, but also knowing it is hard to find a job now a days, I would try to outsmart her, manipulate her, try ways to try and make things better and if you go too far, she might fire you. For myself, I would not quit under these circumstances. I would look for another job, and while at work stay calm, explain my point of view, see what changes I could make there and if she fires you or it gets too bad, you can quit at that time. It really is an opportunity to have some fun and be creative. I wouldn't toss that away so quickly. IMHO.

26. You are thinking about quitting your job ... I wish I had a job .
sigh . I wish I had a job . Lucky you , you have one and you are thinking about quitting it . I would give anything to have one right now . I have been searching for over 3 months . I have probably applied to every business in town to be told either I was too young , overqualified for the positions or not poor .

Just give it another week and see if you compromise with your boss , don't quit your job . Sometimes even hook ups come down . Good luck though .
