Anyone else up?
God, I hate insomnia. I hate being up so late and not being tired, and then when I do get to sleep I do not get deep, REM sleep, so when I wake up I'm just as tired and fatigued as when I went to bed. And this has been going on for months, maybe even years. Me and my wife both caught the same cold so she's up right now, too. I probably will nod off in the next 40 mins, wake up at noon, and not feel any better than I do right now.

I can't even remember the last time I had a dream. I know I'm not getting REM sleep. Probably have sleep apnea. I'm having a sleep study done next week which hopefully should start the process to have my apnea corrected via surgery. I tried the CPAP machine but it was too intrusive and I never was able to fall asleep with it. Surgery will remove my tonsils and other tissue at the back of my throat, so that if my big tongue rolls back while I sleep, it will not block my airway.

I can see how sleep deprivation is such an effective method of torture. I feel tortured now.

4. Welcome to DU, moderatepenguin,
and what do you do that bores you out of your skull? I worked nights for many years and it was all I could do to just keep up with things and get out of there with a minimum of overtime. Of course, I'm sure that we have had much different jobs.

5. I do the answering service/

call center thing. Catalogs, doctors, government services, utilities... You'd think I'd be hopping, with the number of different organizations that send their phone lines over to me, but no...

7. Yep yep.

I've never slept better in my life, now that I've been going to the gym. I've also ditched about 30 lbs., which is also a plus...

9. This sounds like a pretty comprehensive and responsible job
I'd think you'd be hopping, as well. I was responsible for providing television listings to the newspapers. I worked with the commercial networks. You'd think that this wouldn't be that taxing, but we were constantly on deadline and you'd be totally amazed how terribly important this is to people!:wow:

8. I hate to be the bearer of bad news
but the UPPP surgery you talk about is not very effective for OSA. I've seen many patients have the surgery only to come back with little improvement. For some weight loss will help as much as anything. The problem with the UPPP is that if your airway is small in diameter, that could be enough to trigger apnea.

13. My head is just basically fucked up
Since my husband died, I find the nights to be the hardest. We had a horrible marriage, but his suicide has still been very hard for me to take.

I often find that there are huge gaps in my memories about things, then they will just come back during the nights. It's kind of scary when that happens, but I can always come to DU. :hi:

16. Thanks, hon
I have relied on DU more than you could ever imagine. I'd rather be nocturnal, personally - the days are much easier. The nights are when I'm afraid to fall asleep, for whatever reason.

17. When my cousin's mom died ...
I was afraid to sleep during the night time as well . I don't know why , it was just so hard to take because I was reminded of it every minute . But over time I got the message that I had to sort of move on even if I did not want to , and once I did , everything was beautiful . I wish the same for you :)
