I feel so stupid... *

Why is our <sarcasm> oh-so-revered </sarcasm> leader referred to as Bush* on the site here? I feel like I'm missing out on something painfully obvious, but I haven't been able to figure it out for myself. So, here we are...

Thanks y'all. :)

1. Because the history books will have a * after Bush's name
in the list of presidents, to say that he was selected by the Supreme Court.

4. Hmm.

It'll be very interesting to sit in on a high school history class fifty years from now... I don't remember being taught about anything a president did that was controversial. Only the things that were universally, publicly accepted.

I hope like hell that doesn't happen with this one...

6. There won't be anything that's universally accepted

2. It probably started with Doonesbury....
If you notice, regardless of what hat he places on Bush in his cartoon, below it is an asterisk, which is to suggest that he's nothing but another Bush, the son of Bush, empty-headed, etc.

Someone else had another explanation, but this one will do. :P

7. The reason that the asterisk is placed after this Bush* name,
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 06:28 AM by Rhiannon12866
is because, whenever he is named in the list of U.S. presidents, he will be unique, in the fact that he was not elected by the American people, but "selected" by the Supreme Court, in which his father had appointed two justices, his mentor, Ronald Reagan, three justices, and one justice still remains from Nixon. This is a true precedent in the "selection" of American presidents, especially since he lost the popular vote.:-(

on edit: Don't feel stupid. The majority of the American people have no knowledge of this and wouldn't even ask such a question. Most really believe that Bush* was fairly elected and believe, get this, that he is doing a good job, because he says he is.:grr:

8. Many of the American people

aren't intelligent enough to question what they're told, which is exactly why they believe him. This is what happens when people take things at face value.

I wonder, if I sucked up to some justices, could I get installed in a public office? If I did, though, whatever good I did would be negated by the fact that I'd cheated to get there. It would defeat the purpose of my having stood for anything.

Now that I know, Bush* will never go *-less again.

9. excellent question, kudoos for asking it, and . . .
welcome to DU . . .

"The anti-environment agenda of today's White House was
honed and perfected during Bush's gubernatorial years. It
was in Texas that he developed the tactics and policies that
guide his autocratic leadership today: closed-door meetings
with industry insiders who are among his biggest campaign
contributors; reliance on pseudo-scientific 'studies' by right
wing think tanks; emasculation of regulations that cut into
industry profits; citizens muzzled in debates that affect their
communities." - Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., "Crimes Against Nature"

11. It's not just that Bush* is telling them that he's succeeding,
while he has abandoned the hunt for the 9/11 terrorists in Afghanistan, Americans continue to die in Iraq, as they are on the verge of civil war, the economy is in shambles and we have lost jobs to outsourcing and plant closings, global warming has increased and assault weapons are back on the streets, but it's that these facts are frighteningly underreported in our "liberal media," so most people just don't know. This is totally irresponsible, IMO. The damage that he has done terrifies me. He has created as many terrorists that have been captured, because of the seething anger engendered by his unprovoked attack on Iraq.:grr:

Sure, if you sucked up, you could probably get installed anywhere. But how would you feel about yourself and what would you have to pay back? Bush* sure has.

I am glad that you've decided to go with the *. It has become second nature to me. Some on DU just call him *. We all get it. But just lose it judiciously, since it is a dead giveaway about where you stand. On DU, it's expected, but if you used it on FR, you'd be dead meat.:scared:
