1. While I appreciated
your parsimonious review, could you elaborate?

3. Bummer
I heard it was "thin" on plot, but figured maybe it would be another milestone in the merger between animation and pure film. So what was so lame ? Should I wait for the DVD ?

5. The milestone is short by a kilometer
Interior shots looked passable.

Exterior shots looked like a pricey computer game.

Apart from computer effects and post-production enhancement in a valiant attempt to make the filmed actors blend in with the video game background. they used techniques that date back to the 1960s (CSO - blue screen effect.)

They're getting better, but they are not *there* yet.

Wait and rent. It's suitably entertaining, but a wasted effort and Gwyneth Paltrow was ill cast (she can't act her way out of a mime's booth, let alone speak dialogue correctly...)

6. Well, I will probably waste the bandwidth

to download it once a good DVD-Rip becomes available. I think I'll save my $8 though unless the drive-in near me gets it along with something else passable and it's a warm night (they're getting damn chilly up here in central NYS).

7. It's supposed to look like a comic book
You know - the look of a blue screen.

I haven't seen the movie, but the screen caps I've seen of it look pretty awesome.

8. You are being generous...
My suspension of disbelief was totaly and irrevocably shattered when the first giant robot appeared. 1. The feet were too small for the weight, and 2. The cars the bots kicked down the street didn't have kick damage.

I expect a little bit more for my money...

Oh and I forgot the plot was lame... Totaly lame...

Otherwise good film.

10. I actually second that emotion on Paltrow
Very wooden and dull reading there.

9. It was incredibly dumb and cheesy
But I was still entertained--I thought it was a fun movie. :D

11. No, it was quite good, actually
The second half doesn't live up to the first, but the film emulated the Fleischer/Superman style masterfully--and the writers nailed the hardboiled exchanges between Law and Paltrow. The art deco was sublime.

The movie was a resounding success--film students will be studying this for some time.

12. It wasn't THAT bad.......................
I thought was pretty true to the old 30's serials. The plotline was kinda thin, but I don't remember Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon being a rich, subtle story either.

I give it a B-/C+.

13. I loved it
I think the visuals were supposed to look the way they looked-kind of grayish-brown and a little washed out, like the old serials did. As far as the plot went, it was an adventure serial-type plot. I wasn't looking for Shakespeare.

16. If you can get past the plot being incredibly stupid
visually it was pretty interesting. I liked the "look" and I generally enjoy the pulp thriller genre, but man-o-man it was dumb.

Wait for the rental.

Most reviews say that the special effects are good but the dialog is like it was written by George Lucas...
