5. Spa & chick flick day
Really beautiful music to play - Check your library, many have CDs and you can listen to something you don't generally hear. Get something exotic!

Put some flowers out, candles too if you have them

Open a nice sipping wine

lots of fluffy towels out of the linen closet... be lavish,

get some oil & salt to give yourself a 'salt glow' treatment (even better if someone else does it for you ;) Just don't slip in the shower, tends to undo the relaxing effect.

condition your hair, really pamper it and see how wonderful it is

green clay from the health food store (facial mask as fraction of the cost for the premade masks), Mix with avocado for dry skin, water or witch hazel for oily, egg for the hell of it (only if you aren't allergic)

some really good, thick lotion for hands and feet, rubbed in well and lavishly

that special wax for dipping hands and feet (use an appliance for it or heat slowly in top of double boiler, but use the correct wax, lower melting point than the paraffin from the grocery store which will be too hot)

Movies to make you swoon, laugh or cry, as your mood takes you as you polish toenails some really pretty color. Put on an anklet. Put on some perfume and something pretty... just because.

Nail somebody if the spirit moves or just enjoy your own beautiful company and relish your place in the cosmos... Go out and really SEE the sunset. Watch stars. Smell all the scents. Hear all the sounds.

Next day, you are lovely and ready to do whatever strikes your fancy.

4. sometimes museums
will have a free day once a week or month - call and find out

Minor league baseball (may be too late in the season) -

picnics in the park with a good crossword puzzle

sometimes municipals will have "out to lunch" type functions, free weekday concerts in city parks

find out if your city has a business that sells day of show tickets for half price -

there is more, but thats all i can think of now..

6. Find a local bookstore
and check their bulletin board for events.

The local library should also have a bulletin board. If there's a college in town, see if there's a film, play, lecture, or concert taking place on campus.

7. I make a list of all the used bookstores in a city
that I have never been to and Daisy and I will spend an afternoon driving around finding them.

You get to see lots of the city that way, and usually stumble into the avant garde section of town where there are other cool stores.

12. Visit a state park...
Take a picnic. Watch the boaters. Fish if you like to fish.

It's so cheap it's almost free.

13. Historical walks
If you like history or interesting architecture or just walking around town on a nice fall day, many cities have historic walks mapped out with explanatory signs along the route. Or you can find books with notes for do-it-yourself walking tours.

Make it leisurely, talk to people along the way, stop in somewhere for an inexpensive lunch or a mug of hot cocoa -- it's a great way to get out of your usual rut.

14. Get a good map,
the NTS 1:50,000 scale from the Feds. Study the map and find something that looks interesting. Then go find it.

The GF and I spent last weekend chasing a river. We saw it from a variety of locations, found places that are pure magic, had the best time. Total cost $10 for the map, $10 in gas, $15 for lunches.

15. instead of eating all your meals in a restaurant ...
... find a local grocery store used by the residents, and get some bread, cheese, fruit, etc. -- and picnic at scenic places. (I once had to get through almost a week in Rome with about $30 after accommocation -- ended up eating oranges and bread in the ruins of the Forum.) You'll save money, and when you do have a sit-down dinner, it'll be that much more memorable.
