My Step-pappy is a scream. They're on their way here in about 2 hours. They are flying out of LAX in morning.

11. Advice

When my mom came to town back in the 80s, I worried about her too. She had a child-like innocence quality to her personality and she was sooo friendly. She talked to everybody. When I couldn't be with her, I would give her some rules. The "Ma, promise me things..." went like this:

1. Mom, you don't have to tip the man that steers you into a cab. You can hail a cab on the street by yourself. Also, you don't have to ask every cabbie when was the last time he spoke to his mother.

2. Mom, this is the Bowery. The men lying on the sidewalks are probably not diabetics. They are drunk. I know you're a nurse, but you also have a nose. Smell the booze. That should give you a clue about why they're on the sidewalk.

3. Mom, you have to give the token clerk your money before you get the token. I know you want to see the token first, Ma. That's not how it works.

4. You can go anywhere in Manhattan, but you cannot go beyond 8th Avenue on the West Side. The Port Authority is not a good place for you, Ma.

5. Ditto for the East Side. Don't go beyond 1st Avenue. The Lower East Side is not for you.

6. Mom, The Cloisters is a musuem. It is not a religous shrine. When the security guard tells you that you can't touch the thing holding St. Philip's nose hair, it means you can't touch it.

7. When you call me from the ER telling me that you're going to be late meeting me because you're with a young woman who got hit by a car right in front of you and you're waiting for her mom to get there before you leave, its okay Ma. I know you're a Mom even when you're in NYC. I know that young woman is lucky to have you there. And no, Ma, this kinda stuff never happens to me.

8. Yes, Mom. The person in the short skirt on 11th Avenue is a man and no, that's not a kilt. He is not scottish.


I could list some more. Every time Mom came to town, it was an adventure. Your folks are going to be fine and I hope they have a wonderful time.
