What's your favorite genre in CURRENT music?
Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 11:42 PM by mvd
EDITED TO ADD THE CORRS AND NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

I'd say my favorite is singer/songwriter pop/rock, both by the younger and older (but usually not old) artists. This includes everyone from The Corrs to New Pornographers to Alanis Morissette to Avril Lavigne to Michelle Branch to Bonnie McKee to Evan And Jaron to newer Hanson to Skye Sweetnam to Vanessa Carlton to Cindy Alexander to Sarah Hudson to Fountains Of Wayne to Kay Hanley to The Shins to the Finn Brothers to still greats like U2 and R.E.M. And there are more.

What's your favorite?

5. I like the White Stripes a lot
I just haven't heard a lot of the others in the revival. I like some indie too - it can stand beside my pop/rock collection (which also includes Katy Rose (real up-and comer,) Fefe Dobson, The Donnas, and artists like Coldplay.)

7. Put the White Stripes down and
pick up a copy of Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts.

It's the single greatest record (of any genre) I've ever heard.

4. Man, the Soft Bulletin is such a fantastic record.
I've been listening to the string quartet tribute to the Flaming Lips and there are a few tracks off of it.

26. I still gotta run out and get Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Soft Bulletin blew me away... simply amazing songwriting. It's rare to find music these days with such beauty.

9. alt-country
Which is weird considering that when I was a working musician, I started out playing hardcore punk. And to make things perfectly clear, I don't mean the garbage played on country radio; I mean Uncle Tupelo, Richmond Fontaine, Drag the river etc...

I think I'm going to have an alt-country week on my overnight show soon..

14. Have you heard her with the New Pornographers?
It's quite a bit different from her alt-country solo stuff.

She is pretty ridiculously talented.

17. Yes,I am.Lots of other talented females in this genre as well.
Lucinda Williams,Tift Merritt,Kasey Chambers,Iris DeMent,Emmylou Harris,Michelle Shocked,Tish Hinohosa,Kim Richey,Allison Krauss,Marcia Ball,Tracey Nelson,Gilliam Welch,Cheri Knight(if you ever run across a copy of "The Northeast Kingdom" buy it;one of the greatest cds you'll probably never hear).

It's late and I've no doubt left off a number of great artists so to them I apologize.

Can you recommend an Iris DeMent album? I still don't have one.

And the great Dixie Chicks might be alt-country with their next album.

21. For a starter I'd recommend Iris's "The Way I Should".One song alone,
"Wasteland of the Free" is worth the price of the cd,although the cd as a whole is a great piece of work.

I don't listen to "genres". I listen to good music, whether it's rock or jazz or hip-hop or drum n' bass or electronica, et cetera...

...like the Finn Brothers, which I bow to you for mentioning.

I used to call this "intelligent pop". I like pretty melodies with penetrating, insightful lyrics.

24. i am listening to all sorts lately i've gotten into mixes and mashups
that run the gamut from old school/newschool hip hop and rap, dance, and popular stuff. that said, i'm watching and enjoying an old fave, Chris Isaak on some TV show, and i just finshed an hour of Tracy Chapman on Austin City Limits. I often listen to The Clash, Cibo Mato, Charles Mingus, John Zorn, Dizzy Gillespie, Sun Ra, Charles Parker, Pere Ubu, The Residents, RATM, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Massive Attack, Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, NIN and a lot of other music. My fave current genre is a lot of different genres all the time!
