AO-Hell just got one nasty e-mail from me.
After having their Instant Messaging program crash on me 7 times, I finally got rid of it completely, and sent off an e-mail to AO-Hell corporate HQ, telling them what happened over and over and over with AIM, and I told them exactly what they could do with their hopelessly buggy AIM program.

I now have ICQ running, I'm "Archae99" there.

Trillian is a chat client currently supporting IRC, AIM, ICQ, MSN
Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger.

2. There are AOL-compatable alternatives.
If you're looking to maintain access to the AIM network but refuse (or can't) run their proprietary software, there are other programs available. Notably, GAIM, Trillian (which connects to multiple chat systems simultaneously), and Miranda.
