Would You Consider This To Be '9-11 Profiteering'
Something about this just doesn't sit too well with me. I find it to be just a bit over the top. Am I being unfair? Is it just still "too soon" to be hawking these types of trinkets?

SILVER RECOVERED FROM GROUND ZERO!

WASHINGTON, D.C. Corp. ID Center, Thursday, 8:55 AM — Today history is being made! For the first time ever, a legally authorized government issue silver dollar has been struck to commemorate the World Trade Center and the new Freedom Tower being erected in its place. It's the U.S. territorial minting of the 2004 "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar from CNMI. Most importantly, each coin has been created using .999 Pure Silver recovered from Ground Zero!

No, this is not a misprint. The silver used in each gleaming dollar coin is from Ground Zero! You see, when the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, a bank vault full of .999 Pure Silver bars was buried under hundreds of tons of debris. After months of salvage work, many of the bars were found. Now, the same silver that was reclaimed from the destruction has been used to create the magnificent 2004 “Freedom Tower” Silver Dollar.

The obverse celebrates our recovery and renewal with a glistening vision of the new "Freedom Tower," dedicated on July 4, 2004, rising from the ashes of Ground Zero. On the reverse, the frosted New York skyline featuring the magnificent Twin Towers gleam against a mirror-like background. Beneath them is our promise: "We Will Never Forget," These silver dollars may well be among the most historically meaningful coins you will ever own.

by the US Treasury. I wish I had a link, but I don't.

Yes, very tasteless.

5. Aren't These Coins Equivalent To FOREIGN Currency...
even though they are struck for the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands??

3. Obviously the US government is for sale to the highest bidder
These unbelievably stupid and ugly coins are *not* being struck by the US Mint, but by a private company, who has nevertheless pulled strings to get permission to make coins that look like legal tender (and, let us note, materials from the crime scene).

Yucko.

4. Tacky, tacky, tacky

It's amazing what kind of human misery people will make a buck off of. And some moran will buy it, no doubt. :eyes:

I too heard these are not authorized by the US Mint, but I couldn't tell you where.

7. WHO Would Buy This Crap? WHO???
What kind of person would want to let National Collector's Mint, Inc. make a profit off of the suffering of an entire nation... not to mention the families who lost loved ones in the attacks.

The ONLY way this could be tackier is if they had images of the billowing smoke coming from the first tower and the jet crashing into the second tower and helpless desperate victims leaping to their deaths. How about that??? Wouldn't THAT be nice?? Wouldn't THAT drive home the point even better???

6. Biggest 911 profiteers, Guliani and his Police Chief....
They are making millions in the US and around the world, representing themselves as the number one experts on terror. They have formed a huge corporation that peddles safety for companies, private citizens, government officials and world leaders.

Guliani was just in Russia offering his service to Putin. He returned in a couple of days, nothing was printed in the news about his success in Russia. I guess Putin told him to go fok himself.

About those coins, they are printed in foreign countries, not by US Mint.

9. The TV Commercial (And The Web Page) Claim That Silver
recovered from Ground Zero was used to plate these coins. I'll bet that they are made from a similar alloy that our own "silver" coins are made from.

My hubby was on the phone with a friend and started ranting loudly about it at said friend.

14. It wasn't too soon for people to peddle 9/11 trinkets two weeks after...
They will be the most historically meaningless coins as I don't think history is going to be around for too much longer. :-(

</paranoid rant>

18. I Despise The Moniker "Freedom Tower"... In Fact The Word "Freedom" Was...
... pretty much ruined for me when the Republican whores started attaching it to EVERYTHING related to this war. Including "Freedom Fries" as a way to snub the French.

I would have much preferred them to use a word or phrase to name the new structure/s that wasn't so jingoistic or nationalistic.

Everything this administration does makes me want to retch.
