Rats! My brother was turned down for unemployment
He was laid off after 22 years with the same company. He worked as an in-house printer. He got some part-time work in a commercial printshop...no benefits. He quit that to go back to school and filed unemployment on the company that laid him off. Denied by the fine state of Kansas.

So I'm wondering, will he be counted in the unemployment statistics for Kansas? Cause what a good way to make the economic statistics look better...just turn down as many unemployment claims as possible.

1. Denied on what grounds?
That he went back to school? I know that many states don't allow that, but only if it's full time.

5. I don't know the grounds yet
But I have to think part of the problem is that he is filing in Kansas. He lives in Missouri and the website here for filing for benefits has a big section on whats available if you are returning to school for retraining. Nada on the Kansas site. Unfortunately, his employer for 22 years is in the state of Kansas, so that is where he has to file.

With hindsight, he would have been better off not picking up the part-time job. But, most of the jobs available in his field pay less and don't offer benefits. Familiar refrain isn't it. So, he made the decision to leave his field and retain for something else. With, as it turns out, no help from staunchly Republican Kansas.

2. No he wont be counted
What do you think is the main reason behind this white house and congress doing away with "extended" unemployment benefits.

They use every trick possible to show unemployment rates as low as possible. The also like to claim that many of the jobs lost since taken office have now been given back. What they fail to say is on average these new jobs are paying approx. $9,000 less.

What ever statistics this administration throw out in regards to the economy and jobs should be dismissed.

3. I'm almost certain
that if he's not collecting unemployment he doesn't count in the statistics.

So sorry he was denied. What was the time frame between being laid off and then filing? But yes, most states do not let someone collect unemployment if they left a job to go to school, apparently on the theory that the change was voluntary.

6. the statistics only count you once, the first time you apply.it is
actually called..First Time Unemployed Figures...

If he isn't going to school he can get a day job with someone who is willing to fill out the paper work sent to them. Just if you actually worked the 4 hours for minimum wage ...just get the time and money for the specific job, the job was finished and worker was layed off / lawn care or maintence..etc/ and that fills the requirements for unemployment.

you must tell the truth.. SSI is only required after $300 i believe

Your benefits will be a % of so many specific past Quarters..
