A veteran's very short story.

He seemed drunk. He was filthy dirty in face and clothing except where the tears from his eyes and the snot from his nose and the spittle from his mouth flushed the dirt away. He had a duffel bag on his shoulder as he approached the door to the VA hospital.

We all stood clear of this wild man. The security guards turned him away from the hospital doors.

I left there to go to my home.

I will always wonder. Did anybody care?

It's a hospital! How would they know that he doesn't need care?

I think most people do not care but I know I do. I have never in my life been able to pass by a person - or animal - who needs help.

Not surprisingly, the hospital got an extremely bad reputation for that episode and now is closed.
