The only problem: he wasn't in New York's lineup against the Boston Red Sox. ``I went to (manager Joe Torre's) office and he told me. I didn't see the lineup -- that's why I was late for (pregame) stretch,'' Williams said. ``He said I'll be playing tomorrow.''
Along with Derek Jeter, Williams is the only position player on the Yankees' roster that has been a part of all four World Series championship teams since 1996. And Williams couldn't remember ever being out of the starting lineup -- except for injury -- against Boston.
``Probably back in '91; it was another team,'' Williams said of his first season with the Yankees, a fifth-place finish in the AL East.
While Williams was 3-for-14 on the recent road trip and has struggled much of the season, the move was made to get Jason Giambi into the batting order. ``(Williams) understands the situation,'' Torre said. ``We have Jason, we have long-range plans.''
