I'm a verizon dsl customer (29.95/month) and noticed that my internet connection speeds were very erratic ...
sometimes, pages would load in one second; other times it would take 5 to even 10 seconds ... this erratic behavior occurred over multiple websites ...
i called verizon tech support and they gave me the following url to test my connection speed:
http://infoSpeed.verizon.net ... if you go to www.dslReports.org you can find all sorts of other sites that provide speed tests ...
the test showed that I was receiving speeds anywhere from 390K/sec up to about 740K/sec ... that's a pretty wide variation ... the tech support rep said the line I was on maxed out at 768K/sec ... he tested my line and said there was really nothing he could do ... the variation is natural ... that's the bad news ...
HOWEVER, here's the good news ... I called back the dsl group (800-567-6789) and asked for sales ... they told me I was indeed on a 768K line but that
I could upgrade to a 1.5Mb/sec line FOR FREE ... for an additional $10/month, I could upgrade even further to a 3Mb/sec line ... forget it ... I'm trying the free stuff first ... the upgrade should take effect later today ...
the only catch is that depending how far you live from the "central office", higher line speeds may or may not be available to you ... still, it sure is worth a phone call to find out ...
hope this helps ...
