The girl who cut my hair today is voting for Chimpy
Went to the Aveda beauty school to get a $13.00 haircut and style from a student. I kept the conversation light and safe by talking about boyfriends and Mr B.:loveya: ... She told me her boyfriend of two years was studying Political Science and had a year to go. So, nosy me, had to ask who her boyfriend is voting for. She said 'I don't know and I don't care'...which I thought was odd, even if she is 19 or 20ish. She asked me who I liked and told her Kerry and she told me she was voting for Bush. I asked her if I could pick her brain, since 95% of the people I know are voting Kerry or undecided.

So I just asked her why and I got 'I don't know, I saw Fahrenheit 911, but they could have just made that stuff up' I let that one go, I wanted to keep the conversation light and not make her feel attacked.....she was cutting my hair , after all.

At that point, Fox 8 News (of all people)showed up at the school! They were doing a story how Aveda is testing people's hair for Mercury levels. She explained to me that Mercury is being dumped in the water by big industry and is poisoning us (gasp!). I mentioned that it was Chimpy who relaxed the EPA regulations in the first place. I explained how Cleveland and other industrial cities in the '70 were a filthy mess and now Chimpy has industry regulating themselves...which would be like you ,instead of your instructor, grading the haircut you gave me.

I think I might have hit home...She did have a flash of understanding cross her face....I hope so.

And bonus, The haicut turned out well:silly:

1. Haha
She is concerned about mercury? Big polluters and the damage they do?

How on earth did she come to the Pro-Bush vote to begin with? Did she analyze the issues?

“I am very concerned about the power industry has and how pollution may affect me. It really bothers me that companies can get away with pillaging our environment to the detriment of people and the planet. Now that I’ve looked at this as a serious issue I believe G.W.Bush is the man to take on these giant polluters, strengthen our environmental laws, and put people ahead of profits.”

4. My impression is
She is young and impressionable. The school was the one that told her about the mercury...just hadn't thought about connecting the dots.I hope I did that for her.

2. Alright Mrs B!
What good luck having the issue come up that way, so you could rattle her brain a bit. :)

6. I agree
I'm terrible at debating and worry about doing more harm then good or not having creditable facts to back me up. Thank God she met me halfway.

3. Is anyone disturbed by ...
those who literally flaunt their ignorance? They seem to be proud and righteous about it. I encounter this every day and find perplexing. Example: a bartender friend went to great lengths to tell me what a big dem her dad is ... and then laughed about how she is registered but never votes because she doesn't "know anything". Kicker is that she gives me shit for talking politics with the bar owner, who is a transplanted homosexual, would-be libertarian-if-it-actually-made-sense that I am working harder to convert. I'm wearing him down. If she would just pay attention, she might learn something.

9. Her indifference is what shocked me
considering her SO was a poli sci major, you'd think they would have a couple conversations or something

12. Flaunting ignorance: My local bartender is a big Bush fan because ...
she says "Bush is really stupid and so am I so I guess I can relate to him" !!! She actually says that.

It reminds me of a thread someone started earlier today -- a DUer who says her friend, who usually votes Dem is going to vote for Bush because she feels sorry for him, because everyone is "piling on" him!

17. I was always taught that ignorance is very dangerous
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 04:00 PM by tigereye
my 8 year old probably knows more about politics than some of the people you mention. A mind really is a terrible thing to waste.

also he pretends to be stupid, spits, pats his wife on the butt! to appeal to some vaunted Lowest common denominator. Sad.

21. Exactly, he tries to appeal to people by being down home
Ron Reagan Jr said it the best..chimp doesn't care about the common people, the only thing chimp knows about the common people is they are the ones who pick shrimp toast out of the carpet after parties....grossly paraphrasing this, off course...but you get the picture.

13. Meantime, my hairdresser, a mother of 2
school-aged kids, picked my brain on politics the other day, and being an educator I told her that what * has done to education is akin to what he has done in Iraq: Toss in a hand grenade and hope for the best. She laughed and said, "So I take it you're for Kerry?"
Her voice hinted that she is thinking seriously about it. I said that if Kerry doesn't win I will leave this state for one that is being rational about education.

15. Yes, didn't Chimp cut state retirement funds for Texas teachers?
I don't have the numbers off the top of my head, but a lot of teachers retired in Texas this year because it was the last year they were offering pension to people who would receive social security from their spouses
