Kind of pissed off here, just got called a "welfare bum" again.
What the bloody hell is it with some "conservatives," that welfare of any kind, is so frowned on?

I'm not on welfare, I'm on full disability SSI.
But to this slimeball, I'm still a "welfare bum."

When I point out to him that corporate welfare (not tax breaks, direct gov't subsidies to businesses that are making huge amounts of money like ADM,) cost the taxpayers FAR more than SSI, he makes excuses like "well, they provide jobs" or he ignores it.

7. Many times.
He's a real slime-ball who is a Freeper-type on the Fidonet.

Here's his web site:

http://rlhelm.home.radiks.net

He's been kicked out of so many echoes on the Fidonet he'd have to take off his shoes to count them, due to his insistence on going totally personal, and really getting ugly.

His latest is repeating over and over and over that "my mother should have swallowed."

first of all, SSDI is NOT welfare (not that it matters). It is like an insurance for the disabled through SS. So, you paid in money for it.

It's called SSD (I)NSURANCE.

So, tell that stupid fuck that he is one accident away from perhaps collecting it himself.

PS- If he is slightly above the level of pond scum intellectually,(and it sounds like he is close) tell him to check his yearly SS statement that comes in and he will see the number of quarters he has paid into the SSDI and what he would collect if, god forbid, a brick falls on his head or something.

God, Americans are so stupid.

He is on disability, you are as well, and he says you are on welfare?

11. Because he's slime.
Pure and simple.

He's a bitter person who's on his second wife, who only gets any joy from slamming people who are on the computer screen.

People in the area he lives in say he's somewhat of a recluse as well, since he keeps pissing off those in his area.

20. First of all SSI IS welfare
SSI is paid for out of general tax revenues NOT Social Security revenue (Which is insurance, BTW.) So one does not have to "pay into" SSI to receive SSI.

SSI is Supplemental Security Income (not Insurance).

Your last sentance was correct, though.

29. SSI is welfare. SSDI is not.
He is on disability, right?

Disability is SSDI.

SSI is not disability. It is Supplemental Social Security income. It is unrelated to disability, as anyone can receive SSI. Someone on regular Social Security, whose income falls below a certain level, can also collect SSI. Someone on SSDI, whose income falls belows a certain level, is also eligible for SSI.

So what's the problem?

39. The problem is the original poster said he recieves
SSI NOT SSDI.

SSI is a welfare program designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

One can be disabled and recieve SSI.

13. Well
Screw the rich back than....grrr

I'm poor and I am proud.
I have more dignity and heart in my little pinky than all the "compassionate conservatives" put together.
Greed and social Darwinism are signs of an unhealthy unfair society with inverted inhuman 'values'..
I think we humans are all going crazy. Too much stress, pollution, abuse. It seems alot of people take Prozac Valium etc just to cope..Some are sick worse than others, and the most sick spends alot of time playing"normal" winner" and craft the appearance of success..
Because I think deep down we know if we do not stop living the way we do now,we are all going to die off. So if we keep giving conservatives power,we hurry it up,a big game of make believe, and competition for what? and these "compassionate conservatives" wanna kill the world and smite their enemies the weak, poor sick those who are different disagree or won't obey and serve) as they go out apparently ,maybe just to make sure the meek and the poor will not inherit this battered planet when all the bullies show their true fascist faces and are drug through the streets like Mussolini by angry populace sick of oppression .They'd rather kill them all first when they think that they may be forced to live like everyone else, and show compassion and restraint on their greed and behave like citizens and EARN trust. They'd rather die than share. They'd rather die than feel for another person different than themselves. So fuck all these rich sociopath shit heads in suits and ignore their self serving Darwinist bullshit anti social opinions.

21. A guy in my department...a grad student....
used to berate "welfare queens" la la la...come to find out, his child was born through medicaid, and he claimed disability for a back injury (probably from carrying around over 100 lbs too much weight--the guy was obese) so his family received food stamps.

You are right...it is some self-hating mechanism that makes these people lash out at others...kind of like all the right-wing, closeted gays who abhore the idea of gay marriage and make a very public stand, only to be exposed later for being what they claim to hate.

16. My therapist tells lots of "used to be conservative" stories . . .
My therapist says she has lots of clients who used to be conservative . . . until the sky fell in on them.

She's told me a few of their stories (without names, of course). The most dramatic was the man in his late thirties who was a passionate conservative and thought that people with mental disabilities were just making things up.

Then he started to hear the voices.

Apparently even the professionals are not agreed on whether people hear voices because they are crazy or they go crazy because they hear voices. In any case, it's catastrophic. You can't think straight because the voices interrupt your thoughts. The guy had to go on full disability. He was horrified because he'd always thought people had been faking it, and he was guilty because he'd always tried to get social programs reduced.

As far as I'm concerned, all social programs are insurance. I don't care how wealthy you are: catastrophe can happen to you.

And for all those libertarians out there, why should charity be voluntary? Catastrophe isn't.

17. reminds me of a store clerk questioning me using food stamps
I was in a car accident in '85 that left me in a wheelchair for 11 months. One of my first outings was to the grocery store - there I am sitting in a freaking wheelchair and the clerk says "I can't believe you're using these"

Well, f*ck you! I'm not working - I obviously CAN'T right now so excuse me for trying to survive.

They forget all these things are there for a reason. I wasn't abusing the system, I was doing what I could to survive. I know I've paid way more state taxes before and after my accident to pay those food stamps back about a 1000 times..

24. I didn't bother because I knew she was his favorite
I had gone to the store for years and knew all of the clerks.. they all hated her because she's such a "B" and was rumored to be having an affair with the manager.

I snapped back at her at the time and told her I hoped if she ever had to be in a position where she may need some assistance to survive that no one would judge her. I heard later from one of the clerks she had an 'on the job' injury and was on workman's comp :eyes: It's always different when it's THEM.. then it's justifiable.

19. The guy is on disability himself?
That reminds me of a line from the book "Catch-22"

"Major Major's father believed that government subsidies given to anyone but other farmers was creeping socialism"

Obviously he would just prefer all the social programs eliminated and replaced with "bring out your dead" carts. What most conservanazis fail to remember, is that before we had civilization, and social programs, most unfortunate people that had the gall to injure themselves working the lords lands as a serf just starved to dead, or died of of disease. And if you remind them of that, you will usually get a "so what?" in response

35. Its a safety net that's needed.
I had never received any gov't help (other than Gov't guaranteed student loans)

However, my wife and I had an unexpected pregnancy, due 2 months before I was to graduate college. 5 months before I was to begin my first job.

We never applied for, nor would have accepted cash benefits. But we applied for State Food Stamps, and WIC. The Food Stamps bought our food, and the WIC bought our son's formula.

We canceled the gov't benefits the day I got my first paycheck from the school.

They're there for people that need them. I don't know why people have a problem with it. I sure am proud the safety net was there.

40. How do you get disability? I fought for two years
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 08:15 AM by The Flaming Red Head
and finally gave up recently. I mostly wanted the health care which is what I needed to get it (the disability insurance) in the first place. I couldn't afford to continue the doctors visits that I needed to qualify.

I am going to the doctor today (out of my own pocket) just to get something so I can continue to work as a nurse/housekeeper with my bulging and herniated disks (every level lumbar and cervical and a surgery), and high blood pressure, a mild heart attack, and PTSD.

They really gave me a hard time trying to claim disability.

I guess I'll work until I die and without health insurance I have almost no chance of making it till I retire.

Good for you. I wish I had been blessed with better lawyers and advocates.

Suck the system dry; they wouldn't help me, but I'm glad that you got it. At least someone got what they paid into.

(Yeah I'm bitter, but what the hell, I guess I'll have crackers with my whine.)
