1. Wow..

what a beauty. And only $950,000

Or, maybe I should just splurge and spend the extra $45,000 so I can get this hot little number-

Yeah, HOT! And only $995,000!
But let's say you still have a bit more pocket change. Yeah, I know what your saying, a little bit of money goes a long way when buying a home. Well folks, for just $22 million, you can be the proud owner of this:

Not a bad price for 18,000 square feet. Butler and other amenities extra of course. :P

2. I can't afford to buy a house here in San Francisco at all.
But it's worth it. I want my kids to grow up in a CITY - not a giant suburb, and I want them to have some diversity among their friends. Also, the public Elementary school my son attends is AWESOME - teaches Japanese language and culture -fantastic environment.

It is SO worth it to live here. And the image of it as a freaky, hippie, gay town is so exaggerated. Sure, there are some gays and hippies, and they're more visible, but living here you realize that they're just as normal as anyone else. And people you meet everywhere actually talk about INTERESTING things. Art, culture, parks, fog - it's got everything.

For what I pay for a 2-bed MIL apartment, I could buy a nice 3-bed house in my hometown of El Paso, and everything else would be cheaper there, too.

El Paso is a nice town, actually - one of Texas' democratic corners, but there's not much going on there, and you have to drive everywhere.

7. Austin is too overgrown and getting too expensive
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 02:39 AM by UdoKier
Housing is more than double in Austin what it is in El Paso. You can buy a beautiful new 3 BR house in El Paso in a nice neighborbood for $90~120K.

8. D/FW is repuke hell.
Possibly the worst urban area in the US - up there with Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Phoenix...

I was raised in Texas, spent every summer at Grandmas outside of Dallas. I despise Dallas.

9. Don't even think about Seattle
All the Californians thought it would be awesome if they moved up here and drove our housing prices through the roof.

12. CT is solidly blue, but there's still affordable places.
The Fairfield County/"Gold Coast" area near NYC is pretty pricey, as is most of the coast along Long Island Sound. I live in the area surrounding Hartford, which isn't so bad. You can still get a 3 bedroom house that's anywhere from $150K to $250K on up depending on location. Plus, the farther east you go from Hartford, in general, the cheaper it tends to be. If you live east of, say, UConn in Storrs, CT (UConn is about 25 miles east of Hartford), you could still probably pick up a decent house for around $200K.

I wouldn't say in comparison to some of the "red states", it's always affordable, but in comparison to the costs of homes in or around Boston, New York, San Fransisco, LA, or Seattle, it could be a lot worse.
